In a world where COVID-19 has majorly affected how traditional winter tournaments are run, the Florida Get Down served as a light in the darkness. With an impressive 22-team field over 3 days, the Florida Get Down is one of the largest and most premier events in the state. This means there are a host of recruits worth examining! Here’s the standouts for Day 1 of the Florida Get Down!
Alvin Tumblin Alvin Tumblin 6'6" | SF Santa Fe Catholic | 2021 State FL – 2021, 6’6”, Santa Fe Catholic
Tumblin is a great athlete who showed out in Santa Fe Catholic’s 65-58 loss to Oldsmar Christian. Despite his team’s loss, Tumblin was able to shine and show his offensive skill set. An agile forward who plays just as much as a guard as he does a power forward, Tumblin is very versatile. His athletic ability makes playing above the rim very east, and his physical strength and durability makes taking contact and getting to the basket second nature to him. He finished with 21 points in the loss. His team will play Santa Fe High School in Day 2 of the Get Down.
Trey Lane Trey Lane 6'1" | CG Santa Fe Catholic | 2022 State FL – 2022, 6’1”, Santa Fe Catholic
This kid is a shooter! Lane put up 6 quick points in the first quarter on 2 threes to get the crowd’s attention. He’s a smart guard with a good handle and feel for the game. On offense, he has the ability to get down hill but has some work to do in the finishing department. He missed a few finishes that could have helped push Santa Fe Catholic closer to a win. Nevertheless, he got to the rim and I commend him for that. Also, he doesn’t back down from increased guard pressure and was successful in breaking some of the tough Oldsmar press. Lane has some defensive work to do, but also has an entire year to do it! He finished with 16 points.
James Repass – 2021, 6’10”, Providence, Furman commit
Repass has had better showings, but this game wasn’t the perfect one to showcase anybody’s individual talent. Santa Fe and Providence were locked in a battle, with a final score of 34-30. Nevertheless, in his minimal touches, we got to see the James who is a D1 center. Repass moves with such fluidity and is a complete big that can threaten a dunk on every possession and really has a lot of tools. He’s a great rebounder with a great physical frame for finishing and playing at the next level. His team was forced to literally hold the ball for the last two minutes with him off the floor. He has a few areas of improvement, mainly in passing and free throws. He finished with 10 points in the win.
Ernest Ross Ernest Ross 6'9" | PF Santa Fe | 2021 State #57 Nation FL – 2021, 6’9”, Santa Fe, NC State Commit
Ernest Ross Ernest Ross 6'9" | PF Santa Fe | 2021 State #57 Nation FL was the star of the show for Santa Fe. He’s bouncy and is definitely the cornerstone of his team. Without him on the floor, Santa Fe was really hopeless and couldn’t get a bucket at all. He hit a big clutch three which put Santa Fe. He’s very lanky and uses his length to get to the rim with ease. He’ll make a great addition to the Wolf Pack next season. He finished with 12 points and will face Santa Fe Catholic tomorrow.
Mike Trigg Mike Trigg 6'6" | SG Carrollwood Day | 2021 State #148 Nation FL – 2021, 6’5”, Carrollwood, USC Commit
Trigg is the word “athlete” in every sense. The USC football and basketball commit is a physical specimen unlike many you will see in high school. He’s strong, he’s athletic, he’s solid, and he’s unafraid to be aggressive on both ends of the ball. He’s a show to watch and gets whatever he wants, both from the perimeter and in the paint. He’s incredibly explosive and had a monster dunk in the 4th to electrify the gym. He was the cornerstone behind the most dominant team at the Get Down and finished with 20 points.
Tony Livingston Tony Livingston 6'6" | CG King | 2022 State FL – 2022, 6’5”, Carrollwood
Livingston is a big fella who is a nationally ranked offensive tackle. But despite his focus on football, Livingston has obviously been putting work in at the gym. He knocked down a pair of three pointers, both of which looked really good and in rhythm. He used his DT frame to bully in the paint and muscle out rebounds. He’s a got a very good second jump on rebounds for a 6’6″, 225 build center. He scored 23 points in Carrollwood’s 14-point win over West Nassau.
Deebo Coleman Deebo Coleman 6'6" | SG West Nassau | 2021 State #49 Nation FL – 2021, 6’6”, West Nassau, Georgia Tech commit
This kid is gifted and plays on a different level than those around him. He opened up this one with a trigger and was near automatic from downtown the entire game. Going up against another elite guard in Mike Trigg Mike Trigg 6'6" | SG Carrollwood Day | 2021 State #148 Nation FL , Coleman didn’t back down and continued firing all night. He was able to get to the basket and score as well. Despite the loss, the Georgia Tech commit scored a season-high 41 points and absolutely dominated on the offensive end.
Jarvey Gainey – 2021, 6’3”, Eastside
Gainey is making his case as the best player in the Gainesville scene this season, and this performance only helped him towards earning that mantra. Gainey was ready for every defensive scheme that Calvary Christian could throw at him, breaking the press and getting to his spots for jumpers, no matter what defense the opposition used. He can skillfully get to spots on the floor and is a near automatic mid-range jump shooter. He’s got a fantastic handle and is a high-level guard in terms of both ability and mindset. When it came down to the clutch, Gainey could not be contained and was the catalyst behind his team’s 82-78 OT win. He’s probably the best unsigned senior in Gainesville and could be an asset at a NAIA or D3 college.
Johnny Caicedo – 2023, 6’6”, Calvary Christian
Watching Caicedo is fun on its own, but is even more fun when you realize that this young man is just getting started. The sophomore showed an impressive knack for getting downhill and finishing in traffic. He’s the tallest guy on the floor for his team, and so I assumed he was more of a stretch-4. However, after watching him, I realized that he is a true 3 with a touch from the perimeter and enough of a handle to make him effective in going to the rim. He’s strong and young and can only go up from here, definitely keep an eye out for him for the next few years.
Trevor Parks Trevor Parks 6'4" | CG Clearwater Calvary Christian | 2022 State FL – 2022, 6’3”, Calvary Christian
Man, oh man, this kid can SHOOT! The pure shooter stands at an impressive 6’3″ and can knock down jumpers from any spot on the floor. He made far more than he missed and was without a doubt the purest shooter I’ve watched so far this season. On a team full of guys who can knock down shots, Parks stood out as the best shooter and will be very fun to watch this season.
