Continue ReadingIt was the first session of the highly anticipated CBG Winter Series, which featured 12 teams ranging from the 757 area up to Maryland, and there was tons of talent throughout the building. An event organized to allow players and teams that aren’t able to play in their season yet, the event was live steamed for fans and college coaches, and had some very memorable performances throughout the day.
Here’s a look at 10 of the top standouts from the teams from DC and Maryland in session one of the Winter Series.

Nasir Best Nasir Best 6'2" | PG Woodrow Wilson | 2021 State MD | 6’0” PG | CBG DC 2021
Best is one of the senior leaders for the CBG DC team that is also one of the most underrated guards in the DMV area. When their star went down with an injury, Best took over the role as the primary ball handler and decision maker, and he stepped up his scoring as well. A strong guard that can get to spots and score it from multiple levels, he averaged 14 points and 7.5 rebounds from the point guard spot, and showed excellent leadership in his role as well.
Myziah Brown | 6’2” CG | CBG DC 2021
Another guy who stepped up big time in the absence of CBG DC’s best player, Brown played with a ton of energy and showed a never will quit type of attitude as he helped scratch and claw his team back when they looked like they were dead in the water. The 6’2” combo guard stayed in attack mode as he was able to beat guys off the bounce and get in the lane almost at will, and he showed he can both finish and get to the line often as he shot more free throws than anyone in the event. He was one of the top scorers in the event averaging 20.5 points per game, in large part due to a 30 point effort he had against a very talented CNPT backcourt.
Darren Buchanan | 6’5” WF | CBG DC 2022
The star that went down, Buchanan was just starting to get it going when he rolled his ankle in their first game against CBG Select, but he showed a lot of toughness and leadership by returning to finish the game, eventually sitting for most of the second game to avoid any further injury. The 6’5” wing is a guy who does a little bit of everything for his team, as he’s their top threat to score the ball and can do so in a number of ways, he rebounds like a big man and he is a good passer as well. His size and athleticism makes him a walking mismatch as he can post smaller guards and wings and hit the glass for easy buckets, but he’s also capable of creating plays on the perimeter and guarding multiple positions.
Stephaun Walker Stephaun Walker 6'7" | PF Coolidge | 2022 State MD | 6’6” F | CBG 202 2022
Walker is a guy I hadn’t seen in person prior to the event, but had heard plenty about and was excited to see him and he proved why he should be considered one of DC’s most underrated and versatile prospects in the 2022 class. At 6’6” he’s what I call a hybrid forward, someone who is versatile enough on both ends to make an impact both on the perimeter and in the paint with his athleticism, size and skill set. He finished averaging a double-double of 13 points and 10.5 rebounds, finishing with a double-double in both games, was the leading rebounder in the event and played with great energy and was a walking mismatch as well.
Kyle Gaskins Kyle Gaskins 6'1" | PG Coolidge | 2022 State MD | 6’0” CG | CBG 202 2023
Gaskins got off to somewhat of a slow start in their first game, but he picked it up and showed that he can fill it up in bunches and play both on and off the basketball to get his shots. He didn’t shoot it particularly well from deep but has good form and when he’s clicking from there I can only imagine how hard it will be to guard him. He’s quick and shifty off the bounce and can get in the lane at will, he has good body control and is an explosive finisher and he has a good midrange game with both the floater and the pull-up as well.
Jeremiah Little-John | 6’5” WG | The Rock 2022
A new name in the Maryland area to keep an eye on, Little-John showed flashes of brilliance and with good size on the wing he has all sorts of tools for the next level already. He plays with a good motor and will help crash the glass and guards his position well, he’s skilled on the ball as he can break guys down and turn the corner and get to the rim and he’s able to make shots when he’s open from multiple levels. He plays against really good competition every day in practice, and once coaches are able to get out and see him he’ll be on a lot of coaches radars.
Ty Williams Ty Williams 6'1" | PG Rock Creek Christian | 2022 State MD | 6’3” PG | The Rock 2022
Another guy who is set to blow up in his recruitment this summer, Williams was one of the top playmakers in attendance for session one of the Winter Series. He has good size at the point guard position, he has great end-to-end speed with the ball in his hands and he’s fantastic in transition as he makes good reads and gets the ball out of his hands quickly. He’s a good finisher in the midrange and around the basket, and his athleticism and defensive abilities are very good as well.
Ronnie Davis | 6’4” WG | The Rock 2022
Davis was perhaps the most consistent player for The Rock on the day as he was efficient and played with great energy on both ends of the floor. A strong guy that showed he wasn’t afraid to get physical on the defensive end, he was good on the boards and he showed a knack for getting to spots and moving well without the ball to get open and that he can make shots from multiple levels when he’s open. He finished the event averaging 12.5 points on 10-for-15 shooting from the floor in the two games, and was an all-around very good player throughout the day.
Liech Kong Liech Kong 6'6" | C Rock Creek Christian | 2023 State MD | 6’7” PF | The Rock 2023
Kong is a very intriguing prospect that is just starting to scratch the surface with how good he can be in the long run. At 6’7” and likely still growing, he’s a hard working post that is a good athlete with good mobility, runs the floor and rebounds on both ends and he showed the ability to make shots from the midrange and even beyond that. If he works as hard at his game as he does on the floor, it would make sense that he’s going to continue to improve and be a very good prospect moving forward.
