Game action in the BAL’s Covid-19 season started just as that preview piece was posted last week. So before BAL teams get too far into the schedule, we present a quick look at a group of wing and forward prospects from the Bicentennial Athletic League you should keep an eye on during the 2021 season and most likely at the next level.
D’Andre “DJ” Auten – 6’2”/ Senior / Morrisville / Wing: In 2019-20 Auten averaged 13.0 points, along with 9 rebounds per night. Highlighting his BAL breakout season was a 24 and 8 performance vs. Bristol as well as a 21 point game vs. Jenkintown. So it’s easy to see the elite skills (scoring and rebounding) that made Auten a 1st Team All-BAL Constitution Division selection last year. While there is no doubt Auten can really shoot the rock, when you watch film and talk with his coaches, Auten’s intangibles are what separate him from other prospects. Auten is the on court leader for Morrisville and is constantly communicating with teammates. He is always in position to rebound defensively/offensively. He plays with passion and energy at both ends. He out works everyone in the gym. These are the reasons we expect Auten to have an even bigger season here in 2021.
Shawn Baker Shawn Baker 6'4" | SF MaST Community Charter | 2022 State PA – 6’4” / Junior / MaST Community Charter / Power Forward: Baker was a starter last year as a sophomore and averaged 12 ppg. in a “stretch 4” role. He stands 6’4”, owns a long wingspan and a strong frame. So scoring on the interior is not an issue. His physical attributes also enabled Baker to lead MaST in blocks and rebounds last season. But make no mistake, Baker excels on the perimeter as well. In true “stretch 4” fashion, Baker is one of the best 3 point shooters on the Panthers squad. He can also create scoring opportunities for himself off the dribble. In short, Baker is a real matchup problem for BAL foes.
David Olinger David Olinger 6'5" | PF Phil-Mont Christian Academy | 2022 State PA – 6’4” / Junior / Phil-Mont Christian Academy / Small Forward: Last year as the 2nd/3rd option for the Falcons, Olinger posted a very solid season. Olinger is an excellent shooter and can splash home jumpers of every variety – spots ups; catch and shoots; in transition; off the dribble or via pick action. At the other end, Olinger is an excellent team defender and rebounder. When you combine Olinger with senior, all-league guard Trevor Tipton Trevor Tipton 6'5" | PF Phil-Mont Christian | 2021 State PA and Constitution Division Coach of the Year Glenn Dolton at the helm, PMC will be a force in the BAL this winter.
Jackson Mott – 6’2” / Junior / Plumstead Christian / Combo-Forward: Mott is a gifted athlete who is powerfully built and extremely active. Thus he is a force to be dealt with on the offensive and defensive ends at the forward spot. On offense his specialty is putting the ball on the floor for strong drives to the hole. In 2019-20 Mott averaged 9 points and 6 rebounds per game and improved noticeably as his sophomore season progressed. A developing jump shot should bolster those numbers in 2020-21. Mott’s 16 pts and 15 rebs effort vs Coventry Christian (Pottstown, PA) last season provided a glimpse of his long range potential. At the defensive end, he is a solid rebounder, defender and shot blocker.
