Nevertheless, kids are still getting in the gyms to work on their games, as they hope to start their seasons in the coming days/weeks. ASA Hoops has been holding open runs for kids whose schools are not yet playing and I was lucky enough to be in the gym with them on Saturday afternoon. These were the top upperclassman in attendance:
Jake Harrison Jake Harrison 6'6" | SF Boys Latin | 2021 State NLG | Boston Latin | 6’5” | Small Forward | 2021
Jake is a long, physical player, with a versatile skill set and a ton of potential. He’s a long-range shooter, with a compact stroke and a quick release, who attacks the basket off the bounce and finishes through contact. He blocks shots in the paint, pulls down boards, and starts the break with quick outlet passes. He can also contain guards on the perimeter, jump passing lanes, and throw it down on the other end.
Ryan Donahue | Boston Latin | 6’0” | Guard | 2021
Ryan is a high-energy guard, with a tight handle, an excellent jump shot, and a high basketball IQ. He’s a great full-court defender, gets steals with active hands, and is always looking to make the next play. He’s quick going to the basket, a crafty finisher, and should never be left open for three. If a college program gets him into the weight room and helps him fill out his frame, his game will take a significant jump.
Donte White-Barboza | Boston United | 5’11” | Guard | 2021
Donte is a fast, athletic guard, with great strength and a mature game. He handles well, is a good passer, cuts hard, and doesn’t give up on plays. He has sound mechanics on his shot, has three-point range, and can hit off the catch or dribble. He also moves his feet well on defense and has quick, active hands. He has good bounce, takes it strong to the basket, and is ready to compete with college athletes.
Jeymar Guirado | Boston Latin | Guard | 2022
Jeymar is an aggressive guard, with good speed and strength, who makes strong moves to the rim and can shoot from the outside. He has a quick first step, handles the ball well, routinely gets into the paint, doesn’t shy away from contact, and can finish with either hand. He moves his feet well on defense and brings consistent effort on both ends. Look for him to have a big season as he steps into a larger role.
Hayden Groh | Boston Latin | 5’11” | Guard | 2022
Hayden is the type of shooter that you never want to leave open. He needs little space to get his shot off and can knock it down with a hand in his face. He is comfortable with the ball in his hands, can attack off the dribble, and score with a layup, floater, or mid-range jumper. He also has solid speed and quickness that should only improve as he gets older.
