Arizona MLK Classic Recap: Young Stars
In this article:
The MLK Classic took place at the Arizona Grand Ballroom from January 16th through January 18th. Hosted by recruiting legend, Gerry Freitas, the event featured grassroots programs from Washington, California, Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico. Several young players stood out. In this article, we take a look at some of the young stars from the event.
Cooper Campbell 5’11 PG Team Lavine 2024 – The young Campbell was solid. He’s a shooter and he showed off his range this week. Campbell, knocked down his 3’s in catch and shoot situations, and showed improved ballhandling skills when operating the offense.
DJ Thomas DJ Thomas 6'2" | PG Liberty | 2024 #19 Nation NV 6’0 PG West Coast Rebels 2024 (#1PHN 2024) – The lefty controlled the games. He did a great job of using angles to cut off defenders on his drives. Thomas also displayed his 3 point shooting ability, knocking down several long-range bombs during the weekend.
Tyus Thomas 5’7 PG West Coast Rebels 2026 (featured image) – The younger brother of DJ, Thomas was really good this weekend. While many kids his age were participating in middle school events, he went out and tested his metal against bigger and stronger competition. He passed the test with flying colors. He showed deep range ability and played with a poise seldom seen in players his age.
Dylan Chavez 6’3 SG D1 New Mexico 2024 – Chavez was doing double duty this week, playing for his Prep school and AAU Team. He looked good for D1, showing an advanced offensive skill set. Chavez was able to get his shot off whenever he wanted, knocking down several tough mid-range jumpers. His competitive nature stood out as well, as he never shied away from the big shot for his team.
Demeke Smith 6’3 SF Arsenal 2024 – Smith was one of my favorite players to watch during the weekend. He’s all arms and energy. He was at his best on his defensive end, where he showed a good IQ and played with a high motor. He fought for rebounds and was able to get out and finish in transition.
Blake Forrest 5’9 PG Team Lavine 2024 – Forrest didn’t take many shots this weekend. His value came with his ability to move the ball and defend his position. The PG was a good facilitator and willing defender during the weekend.
Tyler Bright 6’6 C West Coast Rebels 2025 – I got to give some love to Bright. He competed well, grabbing in traffic rebounds while battling down low, sometimes against guys two to 3 years older than him. He has the size, length, and motor to develop into a terrific prospect.
