While we label prospects by six positions as far as point guards, combo guards, shooting guards, small forwards, power forwards and centers, I like to put some of them together to simplify things and do rankings based on the three main positions.
Today, we take a look at part one of the wings rankings, looking at some of the top shooting guards and small forwards in the sophomore class.
22) Alex Bokman Alex Bokman 6'4" | SG Freedom South Riding | 2023 State VA | 6’2” | Freedom South-Riding (#50 Overall)
Bokman rounds out our top 50, but he could easily prove us wrong and move up the list with his skill set and ability to fill it up with the best of them. One of the top shooters in Northern VA already, Bokman is a guy who works really well off the ball to get open and understands spacing, and he’s an absolute knock down shooter from deep whether he’s set or on the move.
21) Margad Choijilsuren | 6’1” | Fairfax (#49 Overall)
Choijilsuren came off the bench last year for a very good and experienced Fairfax team and was a great glue guy and showed flashes off brilliance, and now he has a much bigger role and is showing his ability to impact the game in a number of ways on both ends. He’s a smart player that works well off the ball to get open and makes shots from deep at a high clip, he can handle it against pressure and can break guys down in isolation situations and he jumps passing lanes well and makes plays defensively too.
20) Dershorn Orman | 6’2” | Denbigh (#48 Overall)
Orman is one of the more less known guys in the 757, but when I watched him play he impressed me with his knowledge of the game and his skill set as a shotmaker. From all accounts he’s a hard working kid who lives in the gym, he’s a knock down shooter from deep and he’s a guy who can play on and off the basketball and steadily makes the correct plays for his team.
19) Chance Briggs Chance Briggs 6'4" | SF Hargrave | 2023 State VA | 6’3” | Chatham (#44 Overall)
Briggs is a guy many may not know about because he doesn’t play in a big market, but he had a great freshman year at Chatham and showed a lot of potential moving forward with his size and skill set. At 6’3” he has long arms and is likely still growing, he’s a smooth athlete who can get to his spots off the bounce and make shots from multiple levels and he’s a good rebounder and defender as well.
18) Logan Rhoades Logan Rhoades 6'2" | CG Mills Godwin | 2023 State VA | 6’2” | Mills Godwin (#39 Overall)
The son of VCU Head Coach Mike Rhoades, Logan is starting to make a name for himself after a successful freshman year and has continued to improve every time I see him. As you can expect from a coach’s son he has a good understanding of the game and a great feel, he’s a big time shooter with deep range that can get hot quickly and he’s very underrated off the bounce as he has a solid handle and good shift to create space.
17) Jadon Burgess Jadon Burgess 6'3" | SF Harrisonburg | 2023 State VA | 6’3” | Harrisonburg (#38 Overall)
Another coach’s son, Burgess is a budding prospect in the Harrisonburg area that has a great base skill set and frame and is just scratching the surface with how good he can be. He’s long with good size and likely still growing, he’s a fluid athlete that thrives in transition with his ability to finish at the rim and he’s a two way impact guy that can guard multiple positions and can rebound on both ends. He’s a high IQ player that’s a good playmaker for his size, and as he continues to polish his game he’ll continue to develop into a very nice prospect.
16) Ryan Steger Ryan Steger 6'2" | SG James River (Buchanan) | 2023 State VA | 6’2” | James River (Buchanan) (#32 Overall)
Steger was one of the best freshmen in the Roanoke area last season and one of the top scorers in the area regardless of class, and he’s already gotten off to a hot start on a JR team that should compete with anyone in their classification. A supremely confidence shooter, Steger is a guy who has a quick release and deep range, and it doesn’t take much to get him going and take over a game. He’s capable of attacking closeouts and is able to make tough shots in the midrange and at the rim as well.
15) Desmond Roberts Desmond Roberts 6'5" | SF St Anne’s Belfield | 2023 State VA | 6’5” | VES (#31 Overall)
Roberts is a very intriguing prospect who could shoot up this list as he continues to develop, and he showed a lot of promise last year at VES before injuries hampered his season. He has a great frame and good size on the wing, he plays with good energy on both ends of the floor and he’s a big time rebound at his position. He plays above the rim and thrives in transition with his athleticism, and as he continues to polish his game he’ll have a chance to become a very good prospect.
