With their first season of high school basketball behind them, this year’s sophomores are ready to show that they have what it takes to impact the game for the next few years. Though there were not a ton of players that drastically improved their position in the rankings, a few players stood out as having made strides toward becoming some of the best players in their class. Continue reading for a look at 3 players that were able to increase their stock in the class of 2023 for the new rankings.
Ty Gilbert Ty Gilbert 5'9" | SG Grace | 2023 State ID , Grace: Ty Is a newcomer to the rankings this season and he is already in the top 25 after being unranked last season. Gilbert is a dynamic scorer who showed his skill last season while hitting big shots and playing the game at a high level. Gilbert can score at all three levels and he is an excellent shooter from outside. One of his biggest attributes is his high level basketball IQ that allows him to make big plays for the Grizzlies in clutch moments.
Arie VanDenBerg Arie VanDenBerg 6'2" | SG Sandpoint | 2023 State ID , Sandpoint: VanDenBerg made an immediate impact last season and will look to build on a solid freshman season during the 2020-21 year. Arie is a knockdown shooter from deep and he can get hot in a hurry. He plays the game like an upperclassmen and he has a great feel for situations and when he needs to score, facilitate, or take over in another way. Arie will be a great player this season and will look to continue making his way to the top of the list by the time he is a senior.
AJ LaBeau AJ LaBeau 7'0" | C Timberline | 2023 State ID , Timberline: AJ made a small leap in the new rankings, but he was able to push himself into the top 3 in the state, and he could potentially climb higher as he progresses. Already standing 6’7″ tall, LaBeau has cemented himself as a solid big at the 5A level and he already has an advanced shot from outside, as well as a plethora of post moves and ways to score directly at the rim. On defense, AJ makes his presence felt at all times and he does a great job as a rim protector, while also having the ability to guard smaller players on the perimeter.
