2023 Rankings Breakdown: DC Area Point Guards
Prep Hoops Maryland recently updated the class of 2023 rankings, and now it’s time to take a closer look. Here is a brief rundown of all the point guards listed from the DC area.
#7 | Cam Gillus Cam Gillus 5'10" | PG Sidwell Friends | 2023 State MD | Sidwell Friends
Gillus is a classic point guard who controls the tempo of the game. He competes defensively and has become more assertive in recent months. Sidwell’s lead guard has as good a resume as any of the other top floor generals locally in this class and is still improving.
#8 | Malik Mack Malik Mack 6'0" | PG St. John’s | 2023 State #260 Nation MD | St. John’s
Rumor has it that Mack will miss time due to injury this year. Regardless, he’s a safe long-term option at the lead guard spot. Mack has established himself as a key part of the Cadets’ blossoming young core.
#12 | Jaden Johnson Jaden Johnson 6'0" | PG Bishop McNamara | 2023 State MD | Bishop McNamara
Johnson has taken the reigns as the starting point guard at McNamara this year. While it will probably take some time to fully learn the ropes, he’s shown that he belongs. The stocky guard is already built to handle the rigors of the WCAC each night.
#34 | Rieco Hellams Rieco Hellams 5'7" | PG Good Counsel | 2023 State MD | Good Counsel
Hellams has shown glimpses of his potential at Good Counsel. All signs are pointing to him as the successor to Antoine Jacks Antoine Jacks 5'10" | PG Good Counsel | 2021 State MD . Hellams is fortunate to learn from a fellow undersized guard that knows how to compete.
#37 | Jaden Winston Jaden Winston 5'9" | PG DeMatha | 2023 State MD | DeMatha
Winston is part of a trio of talented young point guards coming through the ranks at DeMatha. He impressed this summer with Team Takeover and is carrying that momentum with him into this season.
#41 | Jeremiah Quigley Jeremiah Quigley 5'9" | PG Bishop McNamara | 2023 State MD | DeMatha
Quigley is the second of three Stags lead guards that have shown promise since emerging on our radar. He’s another Team Takeover standout that has a good chance to be a consistent impact player in the future.
#48 | Isaiah Arnold Isaiah Arnold 6'2" | PG DeMatha | 2023 State MD | DeMatha
Arnold is the third DeMatha floor general in the sophomore class that has caught our attention. He ran the show efficiently for New World 15’s this summer while playing a mature brand of basketball.
#49 | Iyan Johnson Jr. Iyan Johnson Jr. 5'10" | PG Avalon | 2023 State MD | Avalon
Johnson is a super-quick playmaker that is part of the new-look Avalon squad. He is dangerous in transition and pesky on the ball defensively.
#55 | James Lerner James Lerner 5'11" | PG Maret | 2023 State MD | Maret
Lerner missed some time due to injury last year but was excellent when healthy. He’s looked solid this offseason in various settings. With the MAC deciding to cancel the season, we look forward to the next time Lerner suits up in that green and black.
#56 | Ryan Sabol Ryan Sabol 6'3" | CG Gonzaga | 2023 State MD | Gonzaga
Sabol is a fast-riser who was not on varsity at Gonzaga during his freshman year but had a strong offseason. While it remains to be seen whether or not he will make the squad, but there is a lot to like about the big guard’s prospects moving forward.
#64 | Lafayette Williams Lafayette Williams 5'8" | PG Archbishop Carroll | 2023 State MD | Archbishop Carroll
Williams is a compact guard who is impossible to stay in front of. He can be a menace defensively as well. He’s a difference-maker on both ends who should not be overlooked because of his relatively small stature.
