With COVID impacting much of the past summer, most of the 2022 class has still yet to be fully evaluated in person by multiple college programs. As that class starts committing to schools, we look at some of the more underrated point guards for the in-state class of 2022.
Branden Northern Branden Northern 5'11" | PG Silver Creek | 2022 State IN (Silver Creek)
Northern is ranked No. 33 in the Indiana 2022 class, but yet still seems to be underrated amongst the top point guards. He is averaging 19.8 points, 4.0 rebounds and 7.1 assists per game this season for Silver Creek.
At 5-foot-10, Northern has great quickness to get to the rim and does an exceptional job at finishing through contact. He has a good shot, but the best part of his game is breaking down the defense and then, more often times than not, making the right read.
He is a terrific floor general for Silver Creek who is led by Purdue-signee Trey Kaufman Trey Kaufman 6'8" | PF Silver Creek | 2021 State #39 Nation IN and Toledo-signee Kooper Jacobi Kooper Jacobi 6'6" | PF Silver Creek | 2021 State IN .
Charlie Smith Charlie Smith 6'1" | PG Fishers | 2022 State IN (Fishers)
The 2022 Fishers point guard is ranked No. 56 in the state but is one of the better guards in getting into the lane. He is a bigger guard with a 6-foot-1 and 182-pound frame, so his strength allows him to get to the rim at will.
He excels in transition and despite not having a great first step, has good breakaway speed and quickness.
Smith is averaging 11.6 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.3 steals per game.
E.J. Smith E.J. Smith 6'1" | PG Noblesville | 2022 State IN (Noblesville)
The Noblesville point guard is ranked No. 69 in the state but looks to be one of the more underrated scorers at the point guard position. Smith isn’t going to necessarily beat you with his decision making, a part of his game that still needs to get better, but his shooting has improved every year.
Smith is your classic scoring point guard and does so with great range on his shot and a relatively quick release. At 6-foot-1, he has good size and very good length as well.
He is averaging 10.3 points, 2.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game.
Garrett Yoon Garrett Yoon 6'0" | PG Lawrenceburg | 2022 IN (Lawrenceburg)
Yoon is ranked No. 81 in the in-state 2022 class and is another scoring point guard who can play both on and off of the ball. His shooting is his best skillset, but he is a bit more consistent after catch and shoot opportunities than off of the dribble. His offensive game tends to revolve around the perimeter, however.
The QB for Lawrenceburg as well, Yoon has that toughness you like out of your backcourt players and that shows, especially on the defensive end. He can get his hands on many loose balls.
He is averaging 9.4 points, 1.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.
