Alphabetically, here are 10 players who are trending upwards:
Aaron Grubb Aaron Grubb 6'3" | PF Mandan | 2022 State ND (2022) |6-3 F| Mandan – He is having a nice start to the year with 15 (ppg) and (7.2 rpg) for an emerging Mandan Braves team. He is an anticipator with quick hands on the defensive side. Aaron is a good passer in transition or from inside the paint. He is a strong hard-working defender. Aaron will play an integral part in any success that the Braves have the rest of the season.
Alijah Dixson Alijah Dixson 5'11" | PG Enderlin | 2022 State ND (2022) |5-10 G| Enderlin – He is shooting a very high percentage from 3-point land and is averaging 10.8 (ppg). Enderlin will go as far as Alijah takes them this season as he is the straw that stirs the drink for the Eagles. He starts the show for the powerhouse offense that the Eagles have this season. Dixson is a very quick and fast guard. Look for Alijah to keep the Eagles soaring and make a memorable run to the State Tournament.
Ashton Biesterfeld Ashton Biesterfeld 6'4" | PF Oakes | 2021 State ND (2021) |6-4 F| Oakes – This beast of a post player has only played one game so far and was very impressive. He put up 17 points and was impressive in all facets of the game. Ashton is a big-bodied forward that has fast-twitch moves and quick leaping ability. I look for him to dominate the paint in Region 3 and to own the boards. Check out this big man who anchors the Tornadoes.
Barika Kpeenu Barika Kpeenu 5'11" | PG West Fargo Sheyenne | 2021 State ND (2021) |5-11 G| West Fargo Sheyenne – He is most likely the strongest and most powerful point guard in North Dakota. Since he has been running the show for the Mustangs, they have looked unstoppable. He is a pass-first PG but is averaging double-digit points with an ultra-talented team around him. Barika pushes the ball well in transition and passes the rock up the court. He is a hardworking defender who hustles all over the court. Barika can blow by his defender on the way to the rim or hit the 3-pointer if the D gives him space. Sheyenne is a scary team with Barika at the helm.
Carter Vrchota (2024) |6-0 G| Central Cass – A fearless freshman who is very impressive when he hits the court. He attacks the rim like a seasoned veteran and shoots the 3 without batting an eye. I like his confidence and his maturity for how young he is. As the season progresses, I expect him to get more clock and make the Squirrels into a team that nobody wants to play in the playoffs.
Cole Holzer (2024) |6-5 F| Central Cass – He is a rare talent because of how well he moves for his young age and height. Cole looks to be a stretch-4 who can shoot from the perimeter and score in the paint. He has great feet on defense and can protect the rim when in the paint. Cole looks to be an X-factor for this Squirrel team who has had a great start to the season.
Garret Meehl Garret Meehl 5'11" | PG Oakes | 2021 State ND (2021) |6-1 G| Oakes – A next-level athlete who has committed to play football at MSUM-Moorhead. Besides being gifted physically he has all the skills and basketball IQ to make him a stellar point-guard. It is easy to see who the floor general on the court is when Garret is playing. He has a great shot, is an excellent passer, and an efficient finisher. Garret is always in control of the game and will lead the Tornadoes to many victories this season.
Lucas Undlin Lucas Undlin 6'1" | SG Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood | 2021 State ND (2021) |6-2 G| Mohall/Lansford/Sherwood – A guard who can fill up the stat sheet and is averaging 21.8 (ppg) and 6.4 (rpg). Lucas is very good at changing his pace as he will get a defender a bit off balance and then be able to get himself into the paint. He can score at all 3 levels and is an efficient 3-point shooter. Lucas is good off the bounce with a great pull-up jump shot. He is a versatile defender who can match up with forwards or lock-up on the perimeter. Region 6 needs to be on upset alert whenever the Mavericks are on the court.
Nick Kupfer Nick Kupfer 6'2" | SG Bismarck Legacy | 2021 State ND (2021) |6-3 G| Bismarck Legacy – A D1 football athlete who has committed to UND. He poured in a career-high and Legacy record last night scoring 46 points! He is a long 6-3 who has a spring in his step. Nick is a fluid player who does the little things right. He can obviously fill up the box score in a hurry. With Nick back at full strength, the Sabers are a team to look out for in the WDA.
Sam Kobbervig Sam Kobbervig 6'3" | SG Central Cass | 2023 State ND (2023) |6-1 G| Central Cass – One of the top sophomores in Region 1. He rose to the occasion in last night’s game when his team needed him and hit shots in high-pressure situations. Sam sees the floor well and is a capable passer. I was impressed with his leaping ability and hangtime when finishing around contact and rebounding. He looks to be a clutch performer who has a bright future ahead of him in Casselton.
