Following another eventful week of high school basketball around the state, it’s time to update the team rankings across all four classes.
The top seven teams remain the same in Class 1A, headlined by North Linn (7-0). The Lynx are winning games by an average of 55.1 points a game, but will get a test shortly after the holiday break against #3 Springville (8-0). Wapsie Valley (5-1) stays at #2, despite a blowout loss to then-2A #3 Aplington-Parkersburg. The Warriors have been strong outside of that loss, with wins over a ranked 2A Dike-New Hartford and a nice win over 3A Decorah over the weekend. Easton Valley (7-0) and Gehlen Catholic (7-0) enter the rankings at #8 and #10, respectively.
There was a lot of movement in 2A, as only #1 Boyden-Hull (6-0), #2 Western Christian (5-1) and #9 Spirit Lake (6-0) stayed in the same spots as last week. Denver (6-0) is the big winner of the week, moving up from #6 to #3 following losses from the 3rd, 4th and 5th ranked teams last week. Beckman Catholic (7-0) and AHSTW (8-0) enter the rankings at #6 and #8.
Dallas Center-Grimes (6-0) is the only new #1 team this week, jumping to the top of 3A following Ballard’s overtime loss to Carroll. The Mustangs have been dominant on both ends of the floor so far this year, winning games by an average of 21.7 points a game. Carroll (6-0) moves up to #2 after the aforementioned win over then-#1 Ballard, and the Bombers (5-1) drop to #4. Solon (5-1) is the lone newcomer to this week’s rankings, entering at #10.
Nothing has changed in Class 4A, as only five ranked teams played last week, and none of them lost. More of the big schools are beginning to play this week, so we’ll start to get a larger sample size in 4A.
