Week 2 Rankings Update
In this article:
We didn’t update the team rankings following the first week of games, as a number of teams, especially in bigger classes, hadn’t played yet. A number of 4A teams still haven’t played, but schools in the smaller classes are starting to rack up quite a few games now, so we figured it was time to put out an update. Below are the rankings in all four classes.
In Class 1A, North Linn (5-0) holds down the top spot. The Lynx were the runner-up in 2A last year, brought back four starters and dropped down to 1A this year, so that’s an easy selection. They’ve won their first five games by an average of 52 points. Defending champion Wapsie Valley (3-0) remains at #2, and they have the best win of the young season, knocking off then-2A #5 Dike-New Hartford. The biggest faller from the preseason rankings is Montezuma (4-1), who dropped from #3 to #9 following their season-opening loss to North Mahaska. The Braves are playing without a key piece in big man Eddie Burgess Eddie Burgess 6'4" | PF Montezuma | 2022 State IA , who got injured in the football state championship game. North Mahaska (4-0) enters the rankings at #8 on the strength of that victory.
Defending champion Boyden-Hull (4-0) holds down the top spot in 2A, behind the strong play of dynamic duo Marcus Kelderman Marcus Kelderman 6'1" | SG Boyden-Hull | 2021 State IA and Tanner Te Slaa Tanner Te Slaa 6'5" | SF Boyden-Hull | 2022 State IA , who are combining to average over 44 points a game for the Comets. Western Christian (4-1) holds steady at #2, despite a loss to Spencer, while Aplington-Parkersburg (5-0), Treynor (4-0) and Camanche (4-0) round out the top five. Van Meter (3-0) and Spirit Lake (4-0) enter the rankings this week at #7 and #9, respectively.
Ballard (3-0) and Dallas Center-Grimes (5-0) remain the top two teams in 3A, and a strong argument could be made to move the Mustangs up to the #1 spot. The most shakeup came in this class (it’s always the toughest to put rankings together for), as four new teams enter the rankings – Pella (4-0) at #6, Spencer (5-1) at #7, Wahlert Catholic (1-0) at #9 and Western Dubuque (3-0) at #10.
As we mentioned earlier, very few 4A teams have played, so there isn’t much change there. Hempstead (1-1) dropped from #8 to #9 following their loss to Western Dubuque, but the Mustangs were playing without star wing Michael Duax Michael Duax 6'5" | SF Hempstead | 2021 State IA , so they aren’t penalized too much. North Scott (2-0) enters at #10.
