Continue ReadingWeek 2 was even better than Week 1 as we are able to see some teams get their legs and shots back but we are starting to get a grasp of how the season will go. With a pandemic shutting some players down some teams will have to make due with whoever they have on roster that is available. Teams like AF and Bingham have already experienced not having some of their contributors sidelined because of a quarantine issue or a positive issue, Regardless, teams, coaches and players are just happy to play.
Young Talent
6’2 PG Race Young Race Young 6'0" | CG Herriman | 2021 State UT , Herriman High School
After a few years of getting minutes here and there and showing flashes of some solid play, Race has finally made it to his senior year and is making quick work of it. He is putting up great numbers and he is hitting some tough contested shots. He is making plays off the dribble and just playing some all-around good basketball. Race is a nice college prospect that has really put in some work and he keeps getting better and better. He’s averaging 23 PPG and has hit 11 three’s this season which gives him a mixture of ways he is scoring.
5’9 G Diego Mulford Diego Mulford 5'10" | PG American Fork | 2024 State UT , Cyprus High School
This freshman guard is doing exactly what we though he would and that is score the ball and hit the long ball. The Class of 2024 prospect is averaging 14 PPG and 4 three’s a game. He is shifty but he also knows where to go when he is finding spots on the floor. He has great footwork and some good balance.
In State Surge
With a lot of traveling restrictions it is nice to see local teams stay in-state and play teams that they usually wouldn’t face.
Example:
Dixie State came up North to test themselves against Wasatch Academy. They held their own and it gave a bigger spotlight to a player like Isaac Finlinson Isaac Finlinson 6'6" | CG Dixie | 2021 State UT who had an excellent game against 4 & 5 star talent.
Davis vs. Corner Canyon was a great game as well as teams like this wouldn’t normally play but faced off early which is great in the long run. It gives us great matchups like Rex Sunderland Rex Sunderland 6'4" | PG Davis | 2022 State UT vs. Trace Ross Trace Ross 6'3" | PG Corner Canyon | 2021 State UT and these kids love these opportunities to challenge the good local talent.
American Fork vs. Wasatch Academy Part 2 but this time AF will have one more player available on the roster in Jaxon Koeher who will provide a little bit of everything. Should be a fun game tonight at the Elite 8.
Early Teams to Fear
6A Westlake
They do have 1 loss against Corner Canyon, but this team is tough as nails and they play defense. They have a lot of role players that can contribute which makes them difficult to defend. They have a pair of bigs they can rotate. Westlake is tough. Hunter Phillips Hunter Phillips 6'9" | C Westlake | 2021 State UT and Noah McCord Noah McCord 6'3" | SG Westlake | 2021 State UT are a tough duo to face.
5A Lehi
New coach and a new look Lehi looks like they might just spread teams out and drive and kick themselves into so many good scoring opportunities. One of the best guard rotations in the state with Noa Gonsalves Noa Gonsalves 6'2" | PG Lehi | 2021 State UT , Tyson Hawkins Tyson Hawkins 6'4" | PG Lehi | 2021 State UT and Peter Amakasu Peter Amakasu 6'4" | CG Lehi | 2021 State UT .
4A Juan Diego Catholic
While everyone will pay attention to Dixie and Desert Hills people will forget about Juan Diego and this team has a great 5-6 man rotation. Their 2-3 zone is tough. Talon Valdes Talon Valdes 6'0" | PG Juan Diego | 2021 State UT , Matty Rodrigues and Matt Rohden Matt Rohden 6'5" | SF Juan Diego | 2021 State UT can really play. With some more consistant play fron Davis Kinneberg this team might have what it takes to win it all this year.
