Within the rankings you can see the rankings for point guards, combo guards, shooting guards, small forwards, power forwards and centers. However, I have a different way of thinking of the game now, and believe the positions in basketball are now just guards, wings and bigs.
So we’ll be breaking down the top 25 of each in those positions. Here’s a look at the wings ranked between 25 and 16 in the updated 2021 rankings for the class of 2021.
25) Garrett Cox Garrett Cox 6'6" | SG Glen Allen | 2021 State VA | 6’5” | Glen Allen (#80 Overall)
Cox is well known around the Richmond area as one of the best wings in the area, and he has a host of schools at multiple levels recruiting him. What makes Cox so tough to matchup with is his skill set at his size, specifically his ability to shoot it from deep and make plays when attacking closeouts. He’s a good athlete who rebounds well, he’s consistent from deep and he knows how to use his size to finish in the paint as well.
24) Kaleb Bingham Kaleb Bingham 6'4" | SF James River | 2021 State VA | 6’5” | James River (#72 Overall)
Another underrated guy in the Richmond area, Bingham has steadily improve over the past few years and had a breakout year for a James River team that was surprise last year and is one of the favorites in Class 6 this year. He’s a true wing who can score it from multiple levels, guard multiple positions and stuff the stat sheet with his ability to rebound and score it in bunches. He’s a tough matchup because he can score the ball in so many ways, and he thrives in the midrange game and his ability to get to the rack when he needs to.
23) Lamonta Ellis Lamonta Ellis 6'3" | SG Hopewell | 2021 State VA | 6’3” | Hopewell (#69 Overall)
Ellis was a two year starter at Hopewell before transferring to Virginia Beach Sports Academy last year, and he’ll return to Hopewell to finish his senior season. He’s the definition of a three-and-d type of wing, has he has the strength and footwork to stay in front of and lock down big time scorers on the perimeter, and he is a knock down shooter who works well off the ball and will make big shots from deep. He’s a quiet guy but don’t confuse that for weakness as he has some toughness to him and will do the dirty work for his team as well.
22) Jaden Baker Jaden Baker 6'2" | SG Christchurch | 2021 State VA | 6’2” | Christchurch (#63 Overall)
Baker transferred to Christchurch from Salisbury, Maryland last year and made an immediate impact with his ability to fill it up and make plays for others. While he projects as a shooting guard with his scorers mentality and ability to knock it down from deep, he’s a guy who can also play on the basketball where he can create for himself and others both in isolation and in transition opportunities. He’s a good athlete and a skilled scorer that plays on both ends as well.
21) Neil Hill Neil Hill 6'6" | SG James River | 2021 State VA | 6’4” | James River (#61 Overall)
When it comes to a jack-of-all trades type of guy, Hill brings that to James River and it’s a reason he could be an All State performer this year. He’s a guy who can and will play multiple positions for the Rapids, he can rebound and defend in the paint, he can make shots and make plays for others on the perimeter and he isn’t afraid to do the dirty work on either end to help his team win. He’s one of those guys that just knows how to impact the game, is always around the basketball and steps up in close games in whatever way his team needs him to.
20) Reed Pendleton Reed Pendleton 6'1" | SG Moravian Prep | 2021 State VA | 6’2” | Hargrave (#59 Overall)
Pendleton was an All State performer last year who was a huge reason that Cave Spring went on to win the state championship, and he decided to transfer to Hargrave for at least this year and possibly as a post grad guy next year. A crafty guard who flat out knows how to fill it up, Pendleton can shoot the rock out to NBA range with consistency, and he knows how to attack closeouts and cut off the ball to get easy layups as well. He’s someone who can fill it up both efficiently and quickly, and he’s a guy you have to know where he is at all times.
19) Devawn White Devawn White 6'4" | SF Carmel School | 2021 State VA | 6’4” | Carmel School (#57 Overall)
When it comes to potential, White is oozing with it as the Canadien showed flashes of brilliance as he helped lead them to the VISAA D3 semifinals. White has a great frame and good physical and athletic tools, and he’s able to make plays because he plays with a great motor and is relentless on both ends. He’s a streaky scorer but he’s a guy who can get to the rim easily and finish through traffic, and he’s a guy who will rebound and defend as well.
18) Marcus Nesmith Marcus Nesmith 6'4" | SG Menchville | 2021 State VA | 6’4” | Menchville (#56 Overall)
One of the top shooters in the 757, Nesmith has all the tools to bring his specialty to the next level with his blend of size and athleticism too. Like many of the best sharpshooters, Nesmith is a guy who understands spacing and knows how to work off the ball to get open and get in the eyeliner of his penetrating guards, and he knows where to run in transition to get easy looks too. He has great form from the feet up, he has good confidence and he’s more than just a shooter as he’ll use his athleticism to rebound and finish at the rim as well. He’s committed to Marymount University.
17) Donovan St. Juste Donovan St. Juste 6'4" | SF William Fleming | 2021 State VA | 6’4” | William Fleming (#54 Overall)
Another kid who is chock full of potential moving forward, St. Juste is an athletic freak with a great frame that should fill out moving forward, and with some work he could be even better in college than he is in high school. He has all he tools to be a three-and-d guy as he can make shots from deep and uses his athleticism to make energy plays that other people flat out can’t do. He’s always good to catch a put-back or go back door for a lob, and when he’s engaged he’s an absolute ball player.
16) Promyse Ferguson Promyse Ferguson 6'4" | SG LC Bird | 2021 State VA | 6’4” | LC Bird (#49 Overall)
One of the most underrated guys in the Richmond area, Ferguson quietly had a breakout year for Bird last season on a young team that should be able to compete with anyone if we have a season this year. Ferguson is a sniper specialist as he has deep range, is always set to let it go and is very consistent, shooting close to 50% from deep last year. In one game, he hit his first seven three-pointers, and it didn’t take long for teams to start gameplanning around his shooting ability.
