That is of course until there is limited seating in the gym and fans, coaches, and bench players are all wearing masks. However, competition in the 1A DI classification looks just as great as ever with some new teams being added and a few dominant programs moving up a division. The 2020-21 season will surely showcase the high level of basketball being played at these small schools and the state championship in March will be nothing short of a dog fight. Continue reading for a look at my top 3 teams to watch at the 1A DI classification in the state of Idaho.
Grace Grizzlies: The Grizzlies will look to make a trip back to the state championship game this season after finishing as the runner up last season. Grace returns the majority of their roster for the 2020-21 campaign and they will be led by Gage Stoddard Gage Stoddard 5'11" | PG Grace | 2021 State ID , a dynamic point guard with great handles and court vision who averaged close to 20 points per game last season, and Ty Gilbert, a shooting guard from the class of 2023 who played big minutes last season and will look to improve his game in order to make a run at the championship. Watch for the Grizzlies to be a dangerous team in March.
Lapwai Wildcats: Lapwai will return most of their roster this season and they are looking to make a deep run in March. The Wildcats will be led by one of the best guards in the state, Titus Yearout Titus Yearout 6'3" | PG Lapwai | 2022 State ID , who can score at will, rebound extremely well, and pass with the best of any competition. Lapwai will be applying their high pressure defense for the entire game regardless of their opponent, and they will be looking to take their shot at the state title.
Lakeside Knights: The Knights will look to defend their 2020 state championship victory by regrouping and continuing to dominate in a new division. Led by Day Day Higgins Day Day Higgins 6'8" | C Lakeside | 2021 State ID , a great big that has tons of excellent footwork and the ability to pass as well as any point guard, Lakeside will be in good hands. Kenyon Spotted Horse will look to team up with Higgins to produce a dynamic team that can attack opponents from all angles. Kenyon has a great shot and he can score from anywhere on the floor as well as rebound and dish out assists.
