Unfortunately, its used in a negative connotation to point out deficiencies more so than strengths. However, in today’s game of position-less basketball, the combo guard has become one of the more important positions on any given roster.
Throughout the state across all classes, there are a great group of guys who fit the mold of guys who can contribute to multiple guard positions.
1. Brody Peebles Brody Peebles 6'2" | CG Hartselle | 2021 State #215 Nation AL , 6’2, 2021: Arguably the best scorer in the country. He can do it every way imaginable from all 3 levels off the dribble or catch. Certified!
2. Kaleb Brown Kaleb Brown 6'5" | CG Lee-Huntsville | 2021 State AL , 6’5, 2021: A true “Big Guard” with the ability to handle and guard all perimeter positions. Very good vision and passing ability, improving shooter, ability to create and initiate the offense.
3. DJ Fairley DJ Fairley 6'1" | CG Hoover | 2021 State AL , 6’1, 2021, Hoover: Can get buckets with the best of them. Can shoot it with range, put it on the floor and get to the rim, and set up teammates and get others involved. Smooth operator!
4. Knute Wood Knute Wood 6'4" | NA lbs | SG Brooks | 2022 State #NA Nation AL , 6’4, 2022: Very good size at the guard position. Has the ability to be effective on or off the ball, but is most effective in the half-court working from the wing. Very good in transition with his decision-making ability.
5. Wilder Evers Wilder Evers 6'3" | NA lbs | CG Oak Mountain | 2022 State #NA Nation AL , 6’3, 2022: Good size and athletic ability at the position. Underrated passer but is most dangerous when putting his head down and attacking the basket. Very smooth and effortless jump shot with range. Major upside!
6. Patrick Burke Patrick Burke 6'2" | NA lbs | CG Headland | 2022 State #NA Nation AL , 6’1, 2022: A guy who leans more to the PG end of the spectrum but is a high volume scorer. Perfect fit for a lead guard who can handle, distribute, and score at a high clip. Willing passer and great vision.
7. Taye Fields Taye Fields 6'3" | CG Lee-Huntsville | 2021 State AL , 6’3, 2021: A slasher who has really improved his ability to shoot the ball from the outside. He is really tough to keep out of the paint and can calm things from the point when the game needs taming.
8. Jojo James Jojo James 6'0" | CG Pinson Valley | 2021 State AL , 5’11, 2021: Quick and explosive guard who will project to the PG position on the next level. Has a knack for getting to the paint but has really improved his ability to score by adding the midrange pull up game. Arguably the best rebounding guard in the state.
9. Alex Odam Alex Odam 6'3" | SG Piedmont | 2023 State AL , 6’0, 2023: This kid has a lot of game. He does a great job at getting to his spots and creating scoring opportunities for himself and teammates. Right now he has a score-first mentality but as he plays with better talent will be the ultimate lead guard.
10. Caleb Paige Caleb Paige 6'5" | NA lbs | CG Eufaula | 2022 State #NA Nation AL , 6’5 2022: Another guard with good size and a wide skillset. He can play from the top and direct traffic or play off the ball and have a scorers mentality. Also very versatile on the defensive end of the floor.
