Treynor’s furious comeback falls short
The Treynor Cardinals found themselves down 18 points in third quarter last night against the AHSTW Vikings. Their offense had struggled to get looks after the first quarter, and their defense was porous against the Vikings’ slashing frontcourt. But they dialed up the intensity and came together on offense. Noah James was able to get penetration in that third to provide a bulk of their scoring, and Sid Schaff led the defensive effort. They slowly chipped away at that lead, and even executed the missed free throw-offensive rebound-pass out for a three-pointer play to cut the lead to a single possession with less than a minute remaining. In the end, it wasn’t quite enough. Raydden Grobe Raydden Grobe 6'2" | SF AHSTW | 2022 State IA was terrific for the Vikings, making twisting layups and contested jumpers all night. He finished with a game-high 37 points to help his team secure the 76-73 win over Treynor.
Spirit Lake wins fifth straight over Storm Lake
Despite another close contest for the Indians, they were able to hold off Storm Lake last night, winning 56-54. Close game “luck” is often pretty random from year to year. I do see some aspects of this Spirit Lake squad, though, that suggest their last few close calls are indicative of their execution, and not entirely luck. There are only juniors and seniors on the Indians’ roster, and they play like it. There is trust and accountability among whichever five players are on the court. Each have their role, they are bought in, and they execute when their number is called. They tend to ramp up the defensive intensity late, deploying their top perimeter defender, Cael Amos, to wreak some havoc.
