Council Bluffs Lincoln finished off Council Bluffs Jefferson with ease last night, and did so with their immense depth and institutional experience. It was a duel between the undefeated and the winless, and it remained that way after the 92-39 drubbing. The team had an effective field goal percentage of 55% (anything above 50% usually qualifies as a good team shooting performance). The Lynx have only juniors and seniors on their varsity team, which has proven to be a significant advantage in the early part of the season. Their leading scorer, Josh Dix Josh Dix 6'5" | SG Council Bluffs Lincoln | 2022 State #149 Nation IA , is averaging over 18 points a game, but their whole lineup can step in and hit timely shots. It is a team of veterans with a clearly defined identity, and the hierarchy is acknowledged and accepted from the coach down to the end of the bench.
Grinnell wins it overtime
The game of the night award goes to Grinnell @ Clear Creek-Amana. The top performer was Grinnell big man Owen Coffman Owen Coffman 6'8" | C Grinnell | 2021 State IA , who finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds, both game-highs. It was almost all overshadowed by two crucial misses. With time running down and the score knotted at 56, Coffman drove to the basket and was fouled with :01 left on the clock. He had two free throw opportunities, and needed only one to go down, but instead made neither and the game went to overtime. The extra time went back and forth. A 4-0 run by Grinnell was matched by a 4-0 run by CCA. But in the end, it was the senior bench player for Grinnell who would walk out of the gym the hero. With 2 seconds left, Brooks Latimer nailed a 3-pointer to finally but this one to rest, 65-62 Tigers.
2A #2 Western Christian defeats 3A #8 Lemars
This was one of the few ranked matchups we had last night, and Western Christian left with the victory and the perfect record. It was shooting and second-chance points that got it done for the Wolfpack. They were patient and worked to get quality looks all night. Lemars matched the competitiveness and intensity their opponent showed, but weren’t able to convert enough looks into points. Caleb Dreckman and Alec Dreckman Alec Dreckman 6'0" | SG Le Mars | 2021 State IA combined to score 34 of Lemars’ 60, but it wasn’t enough to eke out a victory. The top performer for Western Christian was Ty Van Essen Ty Van Essen 6'4" | PF Western Christian | 2022 State IA with 24 points and 17 rebounds, four of which were offensive rebounds.
