Shawnee Mission Northwest win over Shawnee Mission North
Top Performer: Damare Smith Damare Smith 5'10" | PG Shawnee Mission Northwest | 2022 State KS , 2022 Guard, SMNW: Smith put together one of the top pure point guard performances I have seen early on this season. He controlled the pace of the game extremely well on both ends of the floor, lived inside the paint off of drives, and made a ton of plays for himself and teammates off of the bounce. He scored 23 points and 7 assists in the effort and did his share of getting everyone into the offense and involved.
Other Notables
-Isaiah Volavongsa, 2021 Guard, SMNW: While watching the game I could not help but notice what a great second guard and running mate Volavongsa is to Damare Smith Damare Smith 5'10" | PG Shawnee Mission Northwest | 2022 State KS . He showed a great ability to guard the ball and sit in gaps on defense, applying a ton of pressure on the SMN guards. He also chipped in 11 points.
– Landon Wagler Landon Wagler 6'8" | PF Shawne Mission Northwest | 2022 State KS , 2022 Forward, SMNW: Wagler was a steady rock for SMNW all night, putting together a solid 15 point, 7 rebound night. He helps fill a bunch of needs and wants of what any basketball team would want, and his versatility was put on display last night
-Jadin Cullen, 2021 Guard, SMN: Cullen was one of the more consistent players on the night for SMN, consistently making plays from the lead guard spot and made some key plays to keep his team around in the ball game. He has a little bit of everything to his game, and is a really nice point guard.
Blue Valley North looks dominant in win over Southeast High School
Top Performer(s): BVN was extremely balanced on the night so we are going to go with a couple
– Andrew Orr Andrew Orr 6'8" | PF Blue Valley North | 2021 State KS , 6’8 Center 2021, BVN: Orr was a physical force all night and dominated inside. He really shined running the floor and getting himself easy bucket after easy bucket. His teammates do a great job of hitting him while he is running the floor and he rewards them often for finding him. Two massive highlights from Orr relate to his tremendous rim running, a big time tip dunk off of a teammates miss, and a one handed tomahawk coming from a pretty drop off pass from Kernan Bundy.
– Luke Adams Luke Adams 5'11" | CG Blue Valley North | 2021 State KS , 5’11 Point Guard 2021, BVN: Adams was terrific from the point guard spot tonight, getting the ball advanced quickly up the floor, ran lanes and trusted his teammates to get the ball up the floor as well. Adams knocked down an array of long range 3’s, his staple, but also showcased his high IQ for the game with a beautiful back cut for a layup after a high post entry.
– Isaac Patterson Isaac Patterson 6'6" | PF Overland Park | 2021 State KS , 6’5 Wing 2021, BVN: Patterson was doing what he does best, a little bit of everything. Finished a couple of tough buckets off of drives and cuts in and around the rim, rebounded on the defensive end and kicked ahead extremely effectively which made the game come easy to his teammates. In the first 3 quarters, BVN was in a 3/4 quarter press and Patterson’s length and athleticism dominated at the top of it.
Other Notables
– Nikko Taylor Nikko Taylor 6'6" | SF Blue Valley North | 2021 State KS , 6’6 Forward 2021, BVN: Taylor and Orr make a tremendous 2 man tandem and play off one another really well. Taylor is also a really solid rim runner, and his physical presence made a mark throughout the game.
-Kernan Bundy, 6’3 Guard 2022, BVN: Bundy had a great night playing out on the wings, was a pest on the defensive side getting a ton of deflections and break outs. He also has a great knack for running the wings and making plays off of the kick ahead pass.
-Jaylen Pouncil, 6’1 Guard 2021, Southeast HS: Pouncil managed to put up a strong scoring effort in the loss but flashed great ability to score the ball especially off the bounce. Offense did not come easy for Southeast much of the night but the Southeast guard managed to hit a couple of really tough shots.
-Dremel Jackson, 6’4 Forward 2021, Southeast HS: Jackson is athletic and had moments where he showed where he could make plays against the quality bigs on BVN. I really liked his ability to catch near the high post and rip drive and either score or get to the line.
A Peak at Other Impressive Performances
– Zeke Mayo Zeke Mayo 6'4" | CG Lawrence | 2021 State KS , 6’3 Guard 2021, Lawrence High School: In a huge win over Blue Valley, Mayo put up 22 points showing off his tremendous playmaking ability and building off of his 26 point performance in game 1 this season.
– Jack Ratigan Jack Ratigan 6'5" | SF Blue Valley West | 2022 State KS , 6’5 Forward 2022, Blue Valley West: Ratigan is such a smooth and poised player and he continued to show that on Tuesday night. He tallied 14 points in a well balanced win.
– Dawson Zenger Dawson Zenger 6'1" | CG Rock Creek | 2021 State KS 6’2 Guard 2021, Rock Creek: Zenger has already been on a scoring tear this year, last night he rounded out the stat sheet scoring 29 points, grabbing 5 rebounds, and dishing out 5 assists
-Quinn Westrope, 5’11 Guard 2023, Olathe East: Scored 20 points in a loss to an extremely talented Liberty team.
– Joe Berry Joe Berry 6'4" | CG Washburn Rural | 2021 State KS 6’4 Wing 2021, Washburn Rural: Berry put up 17 points in a defensive slugfest with Centennial League rival Emporia.
-Vacario Triplett, 6’3 Guard 2021, Hayden: Opened the season with a solid performance in a win over Highland Park scoring 16 points and adding 11 rebounds and 5 assists.
Special Shoutout for the “Enforcer of the Night” Caden Vinduska of Rock Creek who grabbed down 19 rebounds!
