In The Fast Break Series, we highlight players from the Central Texas area who are off to a fast start to the beginning of their season. This article features a high-scoring group of point guards and shooting guards from the San Antonio-Metroplex, as well as an honorable mention list, who have been unstoppable for their respective teams to begin the 2020-21 season.
Here are the top-performing guards from San Antonio during non-district play this season:
Gavino Ramos Gavino Ramos 6'2" | PG Antonian College Prep | 2021 State TX | PG | Antonian Prep (2021)
The St. Edwards commit hasn’t disappointed in his senior year averaging 20.4 points, 7.4 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 3.0 steals per game in the 14 games played. Ramos is a smooth operator at point guard who can beat defenses off the dribble, with pull-up threes, or as a pass-first facilitator. His skill set can be best described as a swiss army knife, as Ramos does just about everything on the court at a high level and impacts the game in a variety of ways.
Ja’Sean Jackson Ja’Sean Jackson 6'1" | PG San Antonio Wagner | 2021 State TX | PG | Wagner (2021)
Jackson was on fire from the floor these past few weeks netting 39 points versus Cornerstone Christian and 30 points against Waxahachie. In his 7 games this season, Jackson has averaged 22.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 2.3 steals per contest, and has proved to be a great floor leader for the Thunderbirds. Despite the team’s struggles in getting wins early on in their schedule, the UT-Rio Grande Valley commit has been a steady playmaking presence on the court and provides terrific leadership.
Julian Sanchez | PG | Central Catholic (2021)
An underrated gem who just cracked the San Antonio Top 50 for the 2021 class in our latest rankings update in September, Sanchez has been one of the top-performing point guards in the city so far this season and is averaging 22.9 points per game (11 games). Sanchez is a high IQ floor general who can put up points in a hurry, including being a lethal three-point shooter. His top-two performances on the young season came in 39 points versus Austin St. Michael’s and 34 points against Harlandale.
Aaron San Miguel Aaron San Miguel 6'1" | SG Sa Jefferson | 2022 State TX | SG | Jefferson (2022)
San Miguel is the leading scorer in San Antonio so far this season averaging 24.7 points per game (12 games), while also contributing 6.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 2.3 steals per contest. The 6’2″ shooting guard is a flame thrower on the court who can hit from anywhere in the mid-range and beyond-the-arc. Through the 12 games played, San Miguel has hit 20+ points in 10 of those games, with two games with 30+ points versus Killeen (34 points) and Madison (32 points).
Shane Perales Shane Perales 6'0" | PG South San Antonio | 2022 State TX | PG | South San Antonio (2022)
Perales has been a walking bucket for the Bobcats this season averaging 23.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists per game in 11 games recorded. The savvy point guard simply knows how to score the rock, whether that’s pull-up jumpers off the dribble or nailing shots from beyond-the-arc where he is hitting 43% of his three-point shots. Perales has the capability to take over games with his scoring prowess and has proven so by scoring 30+ points in four games so far this season, including a 37 point performance in the win over Southwest.
Anariss Brandon Anariss Brandon 6'0" | PG Judson H.S. | 2022 State TX | PG | Judson (2022)
Brandon has been fantastic game-in and game-out for the Rockets averaging 22.7 points per contest (10 games) and leading Judson to a 10-2 record to start the season. The uber-athletic point guard does a great job in the open court putting pressure on defenses while driving towards the basket, where he’s also been a terrific finisher. Not only can he score in the paint, but he’s proven to be a good shooter and facilitator of the ball, setting up teammates for easy shots and opportunities to score.
Kendall Dow Kendall Dow 6'1" | PG San Antonio Johnson | 2022 State TX | SG | Johnson (2022)
Another big-time scoring weapon from San Antonio for the 2022 class, Dow has been a scoring machine for Johnson to start the season with several performances of 30+ points in just 6 games played. The 6’1″ combo-guard does a great job of creating shots for himself and is a highly efficient scorer from the mid-range and deep. His top performance of the non-district schedule came in 35 points against a tough O’Connor team earlier in December.
