When we first launched PrepHoops NY we thought by now we would be scouting players through their games. Well, as they say, best-laid plans… With games hopefully starting in the new year it is time to get back to our original idea. We will cover 7 leagues. Each league will have its day weekly. So starting with this report and every Monday afterward we will be posting the Section XI wrap-up. Suffolk county public school league. We will evaluate just about every player with a scouting report up until April and then draw our attention to recruiting, AAU, and post-season accolades as well as rankings. Our first installment will be young players who were good last year and are primed to explode this season.
Anthony Daley. 5”9 2023 Deer Park HS
Shot 49% from three as a freshman. He set a school record draining 84 threes. A quick release. Unlimited range. Good at coming off screens in catch and shoot sets. Working on getting off his shot.
Luke Woods 5”11. 2022 Mattituck HS
Sees the floor well. Plays the point guard position with the skill, poise, and experience of an older player. Pushes the ball as well as anybody in Suffolk. Tremendous passer on the break or setting up in the half-court. Very crafty finisher around the rim or in the lane. Confidence has been building which will help him in crucial late minutes of the game.
Matt Garside 5”11. 2023 Kings Park HS
The Garside family after this season will have the leading career scorer in Kings Park HS. It is Matt’s brother Jack. In 4 years we might see another Garside’s name on the leader page. Matt had a very successful year on JV and will now be asked to take his game up a notch. Skill-wise and basketball IQ won’t be a problem. He will have to be a little more physical in defending. But he is a mentally tough young player and should figure it out quickly. A lights out shooter averaged 25 a game (jv). Could become the team’s most consistent shooter rather quickly.
Preston Edmead 5”6 2024 Deer Park HS
Following the footsteps of his 2 older brothers, Preston is already a major force at the high school level. Entering the ninth grade this year he played on varsity as an eighth grader. He wasn’t an extra piece. He was a starter on a league champion. High skillset and tremendous court vision and awareness. Shot 43% from three as an eight grader on varsity. But can score in a variety of ways. Excellent ball handler and passer. Needs to add strength but is still growing, so that should come.
Dante Green 6”2 2023 Half Hollow Hills East HS
With family lineage, throughout the basketball landscape. Dante is creating his own path. Athletically gifted. Plays bigger then his size. Tough rebounder on both ends of the floor. Gets good elevation on his jumper with good rotation. Has played a lot of quality basketball during the summer which should give him the extra experience he needed.
Frank Wilson 6”4 2023. Half Hollow Hills West HS
Some district changes brought Frank’s impressive frame and game to Hills West HS. He was on our list of best players in Suffolk county as a freshman with Hills East HS. He should continue to improve his game. Really strong body and big frame. Still growing could reach 6”6. Good finisher around the rim. Runs the floor well. Very good converting in transition. Consistently accurate 15 feet and in. Needs to expand his range. Could be a little foul prone from trying to block every shot. As he gains experience he will learn the art of blocking shots without fouling.
Here are the leagues we will report on and the day they will be in the weekly focus.
Monday- Section XI Sulfolk county
Tuesday- CHSAA city catholic school league
Wednesday- Section VIII Nassau county
Friday we will highlight players from 4 leagues: Long Island catholic school, PSAL, Upstate, and Private Schools.
Once we start playing games, changes may be made, if necessary.
