Continue ReadingWeek six and seven have scene the holiday season as the final tune-up before district play begins. From the northeast to the southwest parishes in the Boot, point guards were the driving force behind most of the wins by various teams. We will take a look at who performed well and made a mark during weeks six and seven.
Kaleb Miles | 2022 | 5’11’’ Point Guard | Wossman HS – A couple of weeks earlier, Miles had a tough game against Southwood scoring a single point. The return engagement saw a better results for him as he scored 11 points during the Wildcat win. Miles is a steady guard who is an irritant on defense. He does not let guards get comfortable with their ballhandling during the game. On the offensive side, he operates more on the perimeter but will get into the lane. Look for Miles defense to be big as Wossman tries to win a 3A title this season.
Greg Manning Greg Manning 5'6" | PG Benton | 2024 State LA | 2024 | 5’9’’ Point Guard | Benton HS – Manning is a north Louisiana guard who has the potential to be a breakout player. His 17 point effort in the Benton win over Ouachita was eye-catching to be the least. He took the challenge of guarding James Ross James Ross 5'10" | PG Ouachita Parish | 2021 State LA full court denial and did an outstanding job. On offense, he displayed the ability to make the three and to penetrate deep into the lane. Manning scored at all three levels and played defense on a high level with plenty of energy. Look for Manning to help Benton make a district title run this year.
Bryson Broom Bryson Broom 6'0" | CG Airline | 2024 State LA | 2024 | 5’10″ Point Guard | Airline HS – Broom is part of the freshmen group getting to play early at Airline and he has made a mark so far this season. Broom can handle the ball and is very good at pushing the ball up the floor in transition situations. He is also very good at shooting the corner three. He had a double figure game against Woodlawn-Shreveport and made two threes in a win versus Plain Dealing. He is young, so turnovers still occur. However, he is not afraid to jump in the mix and will be very good for years to come.
Trevon Jackson Trevon Jackson 6'0" | PG Airline | 2024 State LA | 2024 | 5’10’’ Combo Guard | Airline HS – Jackson is another freshman who has garnered some on the job training at the varsity level under Coach Hamilton. He was a major contributor during the Viking loss to Red River scoring 11 points. In that game and the Vikings recent win against Plain Dealing, he was responsible for creating several turnovers by playing solid defense, tipping passes and reading passing lanes. Jackson has a knack for avoiding contact and finishing at the rim as well. His play has been very good so far.
Kylan Dugas | 2023 | 5’10’’ Point Guard | Westgate HS – Dugas is one of the quicker guards with the ball in his hands I have seen this season. Even in the Westgate loss to New Iberia, it was pretty evident he was a tough defensive assignment for the Yellowjackets. Dugas has a burst and can get into the teeth of the defense in an expeditious fashion. He is stout also and has the strength to power up when being contacted. His 11 point effort included a combination of jumpers (1 three) which showed his offensive ability. He is definitely one to watch.
Tayshawn Colomb | 2022 | 5’8’’ Point Guard | Rayne HS – Rayne took it on the chin against a good Franklin team during day two of the St. Martinville Holiday shootout. In the loss, Colomb scored 19 points and showed plenty of fight while doing it. Colomb likes to push the ball in open floor and still manages to get the ball on the glass when being fouled. He also does not mind letting it go from deep. Colomb gives his all when he is on the floor and will be the sparkplug for Rayne as the season continues.
J’Michael Gray J’Michael Gray 6'0" | PG Franklin | 2022 State LA | 2022 | 6’0’’ Point Guard | Franklin HS – The 7-2A MVP from last season had a quiet offensive game against Rayne. While he only scored seven points, it was the defense that he helped to orchestrate that made a difference. Gray was part of a 2-2-1 press that did not allow Rayne’s ballhandlers to gain any confidence. He had several deflections to teammates that cause layups. Gray also assisted on other bucks by penetrating and kicking or simply reversing the ball. Gray made winning plays that helped his team to victory.
Travis Zeno | 2021 | 5’10’’ Combo Guard | Franklin HS – Zeno was the other half of the trapping defense with J’Michael Gray J’Michael Gray 6'0" | PG Franklin | 2022 State LA . While he did score a couple of buckets in transition, he pulled out a lot of tools in his offensive repertoire. Zeno began the game with making a three. From there, he carved up the Rayne defense with a series of assists and steals that were high level to say the least. Zeno has great court vision and awareness and made pinpoint dropoffs and no-look passes to cutters. In the open court, he used his hands and feet to make a couple of steals for layups. His 14 point effort was one that showed off his bag of tricks and still helped his team to victory.
Kyron Williams Kyron Williams 5'10" | PG Bastrop | 2022 State LA | 2022 | 5’10’’ Point Guard | Bastrop HS – During Bastrop’s win over North Caddo in the BTW-Shreveport Holiday Shootout, Kyron Willams reached into his bag to show what he can do. Williams missed his first couple of shots and then used his defense to get himself into the game. He ripped the North Caddo guards for a couple of breakaway layups. With his confidence growing, he then nailed three triples. Williams had a cool 17 by the half just being a pest on defense and making teams pay on offense. Solid game by this prep.
Louisiana has a wealth of small guards who have big game. They can defend and score just as well, or better, than some of the taller guards in the game. Look for these guards, and others like them, to be a major factor when they jump into district play the beginning of the new year.
