Continue ReadingIt has been a great week covering basketball here in South Florida. It finally feels like things are falling into a routine in what has been anything but a routine year. A big weekend lies ahead with the Sun Bash in Miami. It is a nice ending to a productive week of coverage.
I would like to highlight more big time performances here in the region. Please feel free to send me any information as I can only be in one place at one time. I want to promote as many prospects as possible.
Let’s jump into it..
2021 Tristan Gee Tristan Gee 6'5" | SF Lake Worth Trinity Christian | 2021 State FL had a night to remember against Glades Day. The 6-foot-5 forward scored 61 points on 24-of-36 from the field and grabbed 15 rebounds. Per MaxPreps, Gee has averaged 39.7 points and 14.3 rebounds in three games. His performance was the best in Palm Beach County dating back to 1966. He was recently accepted to Southeastern University in Lakeland. 2021 forward Jovonte Allen scored 17 points and knocked down three 3-pointers against Berean Christian. 2021 guard Jaiden Santiago is third on the team in scoring averaging just over eight points per game. Moreover, Santiago is averaging 5.3 assists and two steals per contest.
2022 Cameron Johnson Cameron Johnson 6'5" | SF Norland | 2022 State FL is a big reason Miami Norland is off to a 3-1 start. The 6-foot-4 wing has averaged 19.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. Moreover, Johnson has shot 32-of-49 from the field (65%) in those games. His mix of size and speed makes him a problem at the rim. Against Central, Johnson scored 25 points on 11-of-15 from the field. 2024 wing Marcus Allen Marcus Allen 6'4" | SF West Orange | 2021 State FL is also off to a fast start averaging 14.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Head coach Lawton Williams should be pleased with his group in the early going.
2022 guard Gabriel Gaspard Gabriel Gaspard 6'0" | SG Dr. Krop | 2022 State FL looked strong against ATM (Alonzo and Tracy Mourning). The 6-foot-1 guard had 19 points, five assists and five rebounds for Dr. Krop. Gaspard is athletic and aggressive when he attacks the rim. He is a huge lift for the Lightning as they replace key players (Reid/Joseph) from last year’s team.
Florida Christian is averaging 88 points per game through 3 games. The Patriots scored a “modest” 68 points in a win over Mater Lakes Academy on Thursday. 2021’s Joseph Brown Joseph Brown 6'3" | CG Florida Christian | 2021 FL and Davin Hernandez Davin Hernandez 6'1" | CG Florida Christian | 2021 State FL have both averaged over 14 points per game. Brown is a 6-foot-3 guard that is also averaging 6.7 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game. Moreover, Florida Christian has three other players in double figures. The Patriots are up-tempo and can shoot with anyone. 2022 point guard Jose Amat Jose Amat 5'9" | CG Florida Christian | 2022 State FL is one example and does so efficiently. The 5-foot-9 Amat has knocked down six 3-pointers on nine attempts for the 3-0 Patriots.
Forest Hill got a nice opening night win on Tuesday against Jupiter. The Falcons won 77-61 behind 2022 Octavious Williams. The 6-foot-1 guard scored 19 points on 8-of-9 from the field. Moreover, Williams grabbed four rebounds and had seven steals. 2021 wing Donovan Draper Donovan Draper 6'6" | PF Forrest Hill | 2021 State FL added six steals and two blocks in the victory. The 6-foot-6 Draper is also an outstanding athlete on the football field. Draper averaged 14.4 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.5 steals as a junior. Interest for him has come from Sienna, Georgia State, Maryland Eastern Shore, IUPUI, Stetson, FGCU and Drake. Forrest Hill went 28-3 last season and will be one of the best teams in Florida again this year.
