The lanky 6-foot-5, 190-pound wing/post simply dominated the floor every time he stepped on the floor and in the process, put up some eye-popping statistics. Roberts isn’t resting on his laurels though, working hard this off-season on expanding his game by spending plenty of time in the gym and in game action when he gets the chance.
Coming off his first year of high school ball where he averaged 25 points and 11 rebounds while shooting over 60 percent from the field, Roberts has spend the past few months playing AAU basketball with A-Train Magic and a team run by his high school coach, Heather Seely Roberts, who also happens to be his mom.
“We’ve been able to play and get better, and it’s made a lot of difference especially with not a lot of people playing,” Seely-Roberts said. “I’ve been working a lot on my three-point shooting and also on my quickness and strength.”
Roberts did most of his damage close to the basket at Y-C so he’s been looking at expanding his game. He hoped to show some of this at the Pangos All-West Frosh/Soph Camp. While twin brother Malachi ended up stealing the show, Roberts felt it was still a worthwhile experience.
“I didn’t really do my best but Malachi did really good as he made a lot of threes and the all-star game,” Seely-Roberts said. “I was really proud of him.”
A big reason why Roberts is looking to continually improve his perimeter skills is because he knows that’s what it will take for him to achieve his goals at the next level. His dream school is unabashedly Oregon State, where both his parents attended and his father Jason played basketball for the Beavers. Roberts notes that while he hasn’t heard directly from the Beavers, he’s heard from A-Train Magic coach Devin Price that the OSU staff is aware of him and will be watching him in the future.
Until then, Roberts remains open with his early college recruitment and he indicates that another school that interests him is Utah State. His focus is instead on this upcoming season, one in which he has high expectations for himself and the Tigers.
“I think we’ll be really good,” Seely-Roberts said. “We’ll definitely be a state contender, and as long as we don’t have any injuries and do our best, we may even win state. I just want to keep my scoring up and help my teammates get better, that’s the main goal.”
Roberts currently ranks as the #7 player in the recently updated PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2023 rankings.
