Continue ReadingThe high school season in Virginia would usually be started by now, however it’s still up in the air in many areas are some school districts have already announced that they will cancel winter sports this year. However, we will remain optimistic that we will have some sports this year, and we will look forward as if we will.
We will take a look at our picks for preseason all area teams as if everyone will play, looking now at the 757 area which features some of the top talent in the state. This made it very difficult to pick the teams, but we did our best on what we’ve seen over the past few years and what we saw this summer and fall.
Here’s a look at the eight guys we chose as the preseason All Tidewater Second Team.
DeJuan Campbell DeJuan Campbell 6'1" | PG Kecoughtan | 2022 State VA | 6’0” G | Kecoughtan 2022
Campbell is a guy I could have easily snubbed for First Team as he’s been the top scorer on the Peninsula the last few years, and he was tough to leave off as were the guards below him because of all the talented guards in the area. Campbell is a guy who is wired to go as he plays with good pace off the bounce and can get to his spots easily, he can make contested shots from multiple levels and once he gets it going he’s a nightmare to be matched up with. He’s recently showed improvement as a playmaker and a leader as well, and I expect him to see an uptick in recruitment here moving forward.
Jake Cooper | 5’9” PG | Green Run 2021
A first team All State selection last year on a state championship team, Cooper was another guy that was tough to leave off of the first team as well as his teammate Elijah Kennedy Elijah Kennedy 6'3" | SG Green Run | 2021 State VA below, but it’s tough to tell which one of them is going to be the go-to guy and they will likely take away numbers from each other. With that being said, they compliment each other perfectly as Cooper is one of the best floor generals in the area and runs his team perfectly as a guy who can be equally productive as a scorer and a distributor on the offensive end. He’s always under control and makes everyone better, he’s a smooth scorer that changes pace and can make shots from multiple levels and despite his height he’s a terrific defender and a guy who sets the tone on both ends of the floor.
Christian Moore Christian Moore 6'1" | CG Cape Henry | 2021 State VA | 6’0” PG | Cape Henry 2021
Moore is another guy who could lead the area in scoring, but he’s on a very talented Cape team that will have a chance to make a run at a VISAA D1 state championship if we get there this year. He’s a guy who I cannot understand why he doesn’t have more recruitment, as he’s a high academic and highly skilled lead guard that can score it in bunches and has in the gym range both off the bounce and off the catch. He plays with great pace and is a crafty ball handler and scorer, he’s an underrated athlete on both ends of the floor and he’ll likely go down as one of Cape’s top scorers if we can have a full season, and they have had quite a few players come through their program.
Cam Edmonds Cam Edmonds 6'2" | CG Western Branch | 2021 State VA | 6’1” PG | Western Branch 2021
Edmonds is part of a very talented Branch backcourt that will be competing for a state championship if we get there, and he’s a guy who can flat out fill it up in bunches when he gets it going. He’s a highly skilled scorer that can really shoot it at a high clip from deep, he plays with a great motor on both ends of the floor and he comes at you over and over again making him a nightmare to match up with. He’ll be a guy who can put up big numbers at any moments notice, and his toughness and production level on both ends is something you have to love.
Dominic Stanford Dominic Stanford 6'4" | SG Kempsville | 2021 State VA | 6’4” WG | Kempsville 2021
Stanford is one of the most underrated and under recruited guys in the state of VA, and if he doesn’t get any division one offers soon he’ll be the perfect guy for a prep year where he can fill out and get some exposure against top competition. He was a breakout guy last year on a surprise Kempsville team, and I expect him to post numbers close to a double-double this year and could be one of the top scorers in the area. He’s a guy who can shoot it from deep with consistency, he’s an athletic finisher above the rim in traffic and he rebounds at a high rate as well.
Elijah Kennedy Elijah Kennedy 6'3" | SG Green Run | 2021 State VA | 6’3” WG | Green Run 2021
Kennedy was mentioned before along with his teammate Jake Cooper who both were First Team All State selections last year on their state championship team, and he could easily be a guy who ends up being a First Team All Tidewater selection as well. He was a breakout guy last year who also had a terrific summer and fall and picked up a lot of collegiate interest, and is another guy who could possibly benefit from a prep year if he doesn’t get what he’s looking for this year. He’s a microwave type of wing with good size that can really stroke it from deep, is an athletic finisher around the rim and has improved in his ability to create in isolation situations as well.
Camron Kearney Camron Kearney 6'4" | SF Moravian Prep | 2022 NC | 6’5” WF | Salem 2022
Kearney is a guy who quietly put up big numbers last year at Salem, and could be one of the top players in the Beach this year if he buys in and plays with intensity in every game. He has all of the tools to be a big time prospect at the next level, as he has great size on the wing, plays above the rim and is skilled on the wing as he can handle and shoot it from deep. He can play multiple positions and is an inside-out threat to score it, as well as a good rebounder on both ends as well.
Jayson Harris Jayson Harris 6'6" | PF Menchville | 2021 State VA | 6’7” PF | Menchville 2021
Harris is a guy who is possibly the best big on the Peninsula, and after a stellar year last year he showed this summer and fall that he’ll be a force to reckon with in the paint this year if he’s able to play. He’s a very physical guy in the paint who can clear out space and score over either shoulder, he’s improved on his range and ability to step out and stretch the defense and he’s athletic enough to play in transition and play above the rim as well. He’s a walking double-double who no one wants to match up with and is willing to do the dirty work to help his team win.
