Western New York is an underrated basketball hotspot chockful of promising, talented recruits. The 2019-2020 Monsignor Martin League (Buffalo NY) was highly competitive and produced many memorable moments for both teams and individuals alike. This article will preview the 2020-2021 Bishop Timon-St. Jude Tigers.
2019-2020 Bishop Timon-St. Jude Tigers – Overall Record 17-9, Conference Record 6-6
Jason Rowe and the Tigers have a lot to feel good about from their 2019-2020 efforts. Though they were one of three teams to finish an even .500 in conference play, they went an impressive 11-3 out of the conference. Some of those victories came in dominating fashion, including an 84-16 season-opening win against Global Concepts. Even more encouraging is the fact that they remained competitive in nearly every game they played. As an example, they narrowly lost two consecutive conference games, against Canisius and St. Francis respectively, by 12 points total in January 2020.
As a Junior a season ago, Jaymier Patton Jaymier Patton 5'11" | PG Bishop Timon | 2021 State NY clinched the Monsignor Martin League scoring title by posting 22.1 points per game. Calling Patton a volume shooter is a compliment, not an insult; though he attempted nearly 100 more total shots than his next closest teammate (now Junior Kamar Goudelock Kamar Goudelock 6'0" | PG Bishop Timon | 2022 NY ), Patton finished with outstanding averages of 46% on two-pointers, 40% on three-pointers, and 81% on free throws. Doing all he individually could, Patton dropped a career-high 38 points on 56% shooting in a narrow January 2020 defeat to Canisius.
To his own credit, the aforementioned Goudelock is an outstanding player as well and will be relied upon heavily in 2020-2021. Appearing in all 26 games, Goudelock posted 16.3 points per game last year, good for 4th among all conference returnees. Splitting time at both Guard positions, he showcased an innate ability to value the basketball. This was especially evident in victories against Starpoint, St. Mary’s, Cardinal O’ Hara, and Bennett. In these four contests, he finished with an assist/turnover ratio of 4.0, 4.0, 2.50, and 2.0 respectively. It is safe to assume that Bishop Timon-St. Jude will go as far in 2020-2021 as their “Big 2” of Patton and Goudelock can take them.
