Continue ReadingWestern New York is an underrated basketball hotspot chockful of promising, talented recruits. Below is a list of 5 Monsignor Martin League Boardmen with at least one season of eligibility remaining.
- Chris Wright – Cardinal O’Hara – Class of 2022
Wright lead all Monsignor Martin League returnees with 9.9 rebounds per game in 2019-2020. His impressive sophomore campaign saw him finish with 258 total rebounds in 26 games. Now an upperclassman, Wright will attempt to improve upon that number and continue to separate himself from his peers in 2020-2021.
- Peyton Consigli – St. Francis – Class of 2021
Consigli’s 7.2 rebounds per game in 2019-2020 becomes even more impressive when you take into account that he plays the Guard position. At just 6’4”, Consigli is more than comfortable battling amongst the trees for positioning in the three-second area. He will need to exceed last season’s output in order for his team to improve on their .500 record from the 2019-2020 Monsignor Martin League.
- Lucas Suero – Nichols School – Class of 2022
Suero was by far the team’s most voracious rebounder in 2019-2020, judging by both statistics and the simple eye test. Suero boasts an incredible knack for keeping balls alive by using his strong base to weed out an area for himself under the basket. A proficient offensive rebounder, Suero finished multiple games in 2019-2020 with over 5 offensive boards. Suero will look to add to his 6.1 rebound per game effort from 2019-2020 as Nichols’ most accomplished returning froncourt player.
- Caleb Hutchins – The Park School – Class of 2021
As the second guard to make the list, Hutchins averaged 5.8 rebounds per game in 2019-2020 in 24 games. Though he stands at just 6’2”, his 170 pound frame is suitable enough to allow him to battle for position under the glass against players much taller than him. Since his team boasts two of the top scorers in the conference ( Jalen Bradberry Jalen Bradberry 6'3" | PG Woodstock Academy | 2022 State #248 Nation NLG and Keonjay Carter), Hutchins should be able to carve out an even larger rebounding role for himself in 2020-2021.
- Shane Cercone Shane Cercone 6'4" | SG Canisius | 2023 State NY – Canisius – Class of 2023
There is no question Canisus is deep; the reigning Monsignor Martin League Champions lost just a single conference game in 2019-2020. Cercone played a major role in his team’s success in his Freshman season, averaging 5.5 rebounds per game. Cercone oozes with potential; in just his tenth high school game, he reigned in 10 rebounds. Later in the season, he pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds against St Joseph’s Collegiate Institute. Cercone and Canisus will begin the 2020-2021 season with a major target on their collective backs.
