Hart County High School in Hartwell hosted the McDonald’s Shootout on Monday, part of a three-day event. Typically a 50/50 split between South Carolina and Georgia schools, constant adjustments to the schedule has led to a majority of the field being GHSA programs. Here are some of the top players from Day 1 of the event.
Top Bigs
6-4 F Jafari Law – Loganville
Going up against an imposing front line full of rock-solid football players, Jafari Law was up to the challenge and brought his hard hat as he battled Lincoln County. Law provides toughness inside as both a scorer and rebounder. He tallied 14 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals while going 6-8 from the line. Law converted up close and had a pair of buckets with his back to the basket, finishing over his left shoulder. Law made some nice touch passes inside as the Red Devils tore up Lincoln County’s zone. Law’s effort will take him a long way.
6-5 PF Chris Dorbor – Loganville
The sneaky explosive big man almost had the dunk of the day in traffic. Chris Dorbor is an interesting prospect. He’s got length and energy to boot inside. Dorbor is a quality passer for a big man and can hurt teams in high-low situations. His length makes him an impactful defender, able to swat shots at the rim.
2022 6-9 C Dominic Cooks – GAC
Dominic Cooks’ move to GAC is a big one for GAC both literally and figuratively. He is still developing both his game and body, but long-term it looks like Cooks has a good future. He did a nice job battling for position and was able to score with his back to the basket when opportunities presented themselves. His hook shot is tough to defend at the high school level. Cooks is a quality shot blocker that can defend without fouling. Cooks’ best basketball is ahead of him. He could be a late bloomer as he’s shown potential on both sides of the ball.
2022 6-9 C Eddie Page Eddie Page 6'9" | C GAC | 2022 State GA – GAC
Extremely long with an athletic build, Eddie Page Eddie Page 6'9" | C GAC | 2022 State GA has the physical traits of being an impact maker eventually. He needs to work on his balance, footwork and offense inside, but his ability to snatch rebounds over smaller opponents and finish garbage points over top are a major boon to the Spartans. His defense is ahead of his offense right now. Learning to play with a mean streak could really help moving forward.
2022 6-3 F Jamil Burton – Elbert County
Jamil Burton was all over the place, setting the tone with 12 of his 20 points in the first quarter. The southpaw was extremely effective on the glass, using his length and quickness to get off the floor quicker than the plodding GAC bigs. Burton had a double-double with 11 rebounds and scored six points in the deciding fourth quarter. Burton plays exceptionally hard and is a total effort guy. He converted on a few And-1s and showed a developing touch from within 15-feet. Only a junior, Burton still has a chance to develop into a stalwart for the Blue Devils moving forward. Monday was a huge confidence booster.
