Continue ReadingComing into the game Oak Grove was 1-0 and Beulah was 1-1. This was a competitive game between two quality squads. Beulah won the game in the 2nd and 4th quarters. They outscored the Grover’s by 9 in the second and 8 in the 4th. Oak Grove is a unique team defensively. They press most of the game and trap off and on. What makes them unique is that that trap full court, ¾ court, and in the corners of ½ court. They would also switch every screen at times. This is tough to play against as it switches up the tempo and keeps the other team guessing. Beulah handled the press and traps for the most part. They did turn it over at times and forced a few shots early. The Miners have multiple guards that can handle the ball. Otherwise, they would have been in big trouble vs. the Oak Grove defense. Beulah played half-court man and tried to focus on taking away Oak Grove’s star player Noah Swenson Noah Swenson 6'5" | PF Oak Grove | 2021 State ND . He finished the game with 24 points and had 11 of those for the charity stripe. Beulah was unsuccessful at taking Swenson out of the game but as good as he is most teams will only be able to contain him. The Miners did a nice job with their team defense and kept the other guards at bay.
On a side note, Beulah’s Trey Brandt Trey Brandt 6'1" | PG Beulah | 2022 State ND scored his 1,000-career point in the game. He is just a junior and is having a great start to the season averaging 26 points per game.
Game Takeaways – Swenson is a beast who will demand a double-team all season long. Trey Brandt Trey Brandt 6'1" | PG Beulah | 2022 State ND is a college-ready guard as a junior. As a team, the Miners pass it as well as anyone. Beulah has 4 guards who can handle it and shoot it. Oak Grove will give teams fits all year long with their press and traps. The Grover’s did a nice job feeding the beast inside and playing off of him. Beulah plays solid team defense. As their communication and help-side improve they could be elite on D.

Oak Grove
Cody Card (2022) |5-11 G| Oak Grove – Lefty who can finish with both hands around the basket. He is an athletic guard who is tough to stop when he gets going downhill.
Mason Martinson Mason Martinson 5'11" | PG Oak Grove | 2021 State ND (2021) |5-11 G| Oak Grove – A shooter who likes to let it fly from NBA range. He can also finish creatively around the rim.
Noah Swenson Noah Swenson 6'5" | PF Oak Grove | 2021 State ND (2021) |6-5 F| Oak Grove – Will be a mismatch all season long. He is big, strong, and athletic. Noah can shoot the 3, so the D has to come out and guard him on the perimeter. He is athletic enough to blow by the D with his first step. He has the size and strength to score inside. Noah has nice moves and can finish through contact. He lives at the line which makes him even scarier. If he is not double-teamed, he will score. Noah is also a fine rebounder. My favorite part of his game is when he catches, squares up, and rips it past the defender.
Trevon Rodriguez (2022) |5-11 G| Oak Grove – Runs the show for the Grover’s. Trevon is a quick guard with a nice pull-up. He fly’s around on defense and makes plays happen.
Beulah
Dawson Zuroff (2021) |6-2 G| Beulah – One of the best rebounding guards I have watched all season. He attacks the ball off the rim and snatches it at the high point. Dawson has hops and is relentless. He plays very unselfish but is a capable outside shooter. Dawson does the little things that make the Miners better.
Nathan Battest (2021) |5-10 G| Beulah – Real deal shooter from beyond the arc. He handles the ball well and is unselfish like the rest of the team. Nathan plays hard and does a nice job on the defensive side.
Trapper Skalsky (2022) |6-0 G| Beulah – Another shooter for the Miners. He shoots it quick but never hurries. I like his pull-up jumper. He can be driving full speed and stop on a dime for a soft pull-up.
Trey Brandt Trey Brandt 6'1" | PG Beulah | 2022 State ND (2022) |6-0 G| Beulah – 1,000-point scorer only 3 games into his junior season. I like the demeanor he plays with. He can score from all over the court. Trey is calm vs. pressure and makes the easy pass to break the press. He is unselfish in the half-court and looks to involve others in the offense. Impressive handles and great floater/runner. He is one of the few right-handed players that drives/dribbles with his left more than his right. Expect many games this season where he is scoring in the 30’s.
