With the high school basketball regular season temporarily on hold, various grassroots events have stepped in to take its place, and here’s a quick look at a few players who have used that time to improve and showcase their game.
1. Gavin Davis – Narbonne 2021
Davis is a very athletic player; a rim runner who sprints down the court in transition and gets out ahead of the defense. He’s slim, but he’s strong and effective around the rim. He moves well without the ball, especially on the break and teammates will find him for lob passes. He has good length and is a good wing defender on ball. He can also contest shots in the paint. Can play multiple positions.
2. Jake Petroff – Mater Dei 2022
Petroff is a knockdown shooter. He moves so well without the ball on the arc and is constantly in motion. Very good spot up shooter. He gets himself open and has a knack for burying the corner three. He’s got a very quick release and defenders need to stay attached to him at all times. In transition, he trails the ball-handler and can knock down threes from a pass back.
3. Kerie Edmead – St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy 2021
Edmead is a natural scoring guard capable of putting up points in a hurry. He puts pressure on the defense with his slashing game and has some nice hesitation moves on his way to the rim. He can finish through contact at the rim. A good three-point shooter as well. As a point guard, he can facilitate too. He can drive and dish to shooters/cutters and has good vision on the break.
