With the high school basketball regular season temporarily on hold, various grassroots events have stepped in to take its place, and here’s a quick look at a few players who have used that time to improve and showcase their game.
1. Paris Johnson – South Bay Supreme White
Johnson stood out for his play in the paint. He’s a very strong player and he uses his body well around the rim. He can establish position in the paint and is able to power his way to the rim through the defense. He’s a very good rebounder; he boxes out properly. He chases down boards too that tend to bounce away from the rim.
2. Max Barnett – Redondo Union 2022
Barnett has a strong slashing game. He attacks hard off the dribble. He doesn’t shy away from contact; he goes up strong at the rim and can finish over the defense. Slashing is his primary weapon, but he can shoot from three-point range as well. His dribble penetration sucks in the defense and opens up the floor for the rest of the team.
3. Christian Bermudez – Los Alamitos 2022
Bermudez is another strong player in the post. When he has a size advantage over his defender, he can recognize it and establish himself in the paint. Good back to the basket player who finishes strong with contact. He can draw fouls around the rim and he shoots free-throws at a consistently good clip. He can catch the ball on the wing and he can make a move to get closer to the rim.
4. Dennis Evans Dennis Evans 6'10" | C Riverside Hillcrest | 2023 CA-S – Hillcrest 2023
Evans is still a very raw prospect, but the talent and the tools are there. He has a lot of upside on the defensive end. As a 7-footer, he towers over the majority of the competition. He has the makings of being an elite rim protecter and he already has some good shot blocking instincts. He has good hands and is active around the rim off assisted buckets. Next step would be to develop some go-to moves in the paint.
