With the high school basketball regular season temporarily on hold, various grassroots events have stepped in to take its place, and here’s a quick look at a few players who have used that time to improve and showcase their game.
1. Zamarre Glaude – Oak Hills 2022
Glaude is a great athlete who has good size for a wing. He can finish strong around the rim. He’s a good defensive player and he uses his length to his advantage. He plays strong on-ball defense and he can contest and block/alter shots in the paint. He has solid handles for a wing and he can bring the ball up in transition. He has a solid midrange shot and is comfortable with the ball in his hands.
2. Michael Hill – Fastbreak 17U
Hill is a very tough and strong wing. On this particular team, he was playing as a big, but he clearly is best suited as a strong and physical wing based on his skill set. He can handle the ball and he can shoot from three-point range. Comes off screens well to get himself a clear look from distance. He can attack his way to the rim and he is a decent rebounder as well.
3. Cole Stokes – Redondo Union 2023
Stokes is a solid player on and off the ball. He moves well in the halfcourt, never stationary, and he keeps the ball moving. He’s a strong rebounder and he gets the ball to his point guard immediately after securing the board. He sprints out in transition; really gets up and down the floor well. He’s very active defensively around the rim. He moves well without the ball and is always ready to catch a pass.
4. Patrick Johnson – Compton 2021
Johnson is a very smart player with a great overall feel for the game. He’s a point guard who plays with good pace. He pushes the ball in transition. Very unselfish, he has good court vision and he sees the open teammate. He has a good midrange game and he can get to his spots on the court. He’s a confident finisher and he has range out to the three-point line. He will hit consistently if open.
