Ball movement, physicality and tempo headlined a successful opening to the season for Shaker Heights, ultimately defeating the Patriots by a final score of 110-65. Here are a few players that stood out Wednesday afternoon.
Top Performers
Alex Benson | 6-4 Senior | Shaker Heights
Probably the most aggressive player I saw on the court Wednesday afternoon, Alex Benson was all over the ball, fighting for rebounds and loose balls in creating fast break opportunities for his team. The senior forward finished the game with a team-high 22 points, most of them coming inside the paint. Active hands-on defense and used his length to his advantage, creating a plethora of turnovers throughout the first half.
Jamail Spivey Jr | 5-11 Junior | Cornerstone Christian Academy
The player that got the Patriot offense going at times in the game, Jamail Spivey was able to finish the night netting 17 points during the loss. He’s got a quick handle and was able to create some space in the open court, allowing him to find his teammates for some looks. The jump shot was a bit off, so the point guard was able to score most of his points near the rim. Spivey pushes the tempo for his team and often used a variety of crossover moves to finish with a layup. It didn’t matter if he was going right or left, Spivey often found a way near the basket.
Cody Head Cody Head 6'1" | CG Lutheran East | 2023 State OH | 6-2 Soph | Shaker Heights
One player I was excited to watch for was Cody Head Cody Head 6'1" | CG Lutheran East | 2023 State OH , a player who’s set to take on an expanded role starting as a sophomore. He was able to break the Patriot press often throughout the first half. Head is active on moving without the ball in his hands and that led him for open looks near the rim. He was one of the most active players on the glass as well and looked comfortable with the ball in his hands as he made his first varsity start of his young career.
Danny Young Jr Danny Young Jr 6'2" | CG Shaker Heights | 2022 State OH | 6-2 Junior | Shaker Heights
No player started the game better than Danny Young Jr Danny Young Jr 6'2" | CG Shaker Heights | 2022 State OH He opened up scoring five points in a hurry, not afraid to test his outside jump shot. All throughout the game, he made sure to push the tempo to favor Shaker, capitalizing in the transition game. The point guard will look to take control of an offense that has the potential to rise swiftly throughout Northeast Ohio. He displayed excellent court vision and was disruptive on the defensive side of the ball, giving the Patriots’ best player difficulties getting past him around the perimeter. He finished with 18 points during the win.
