Garrett Athon Garrett Athon 6'4" | C Jefferson West | 2021 State KS , senior, Jeff West:
Jefferson West has dropped a couple of games to really good teams – Royal Valley and Perry-Lecompton. Athon has been consistently good throughout. His only game in single digits was 7 in a blowout of Hiawatha. Athon is a powerful presence in the post and has nice moves in the lane. He can also move outside and be a threat from the perimeter. He dropped 22 against Sabetha and 18 in the loss to Perry-Lecompton.
Kurtis Beck Kurtis Beck 6'4" | PF Nemaha Central | 2022 State KS , junior, Nemaha Central:
The 6-foot-4 Beck teams with his twin brother Marcus to pose an intimidating duo. Kurtis has been the primary scorer for the 3-1 Thunder. Beck popped in 21 against Hiawatha and 18 against Sabetha. The moves well for his size, is a disruptive force in the lane, and is a good rebounder who scores following up missed shots.
Bray Davies, senior, Riverside:
The scoring output of the 5-foot-9 has been a bit of a revelation. Davies averaged just 10.3 points per game a year ago. This season, he has found his scoring groove for the 3-2 Cyclones. In the last three outings, Davies scored 29 against Royal Valley, 18 against Perry-Lecompton and 21 against Hiawatha.
Kale Purcell Kale Purcell 6'3" | SF Holton | 2021 State KS , senior, Holton:
The Wildcats are off to a solid start with a 3-1 mark with the 6-foot-3 Purcell leading the way. He has scored at least 14 in every game, with a high of 25 against Burlington. The smooth, springy athlete can rebound and defend too, and his ability to elevate gives him an advantage.
Parker Stone Parker Stone 6'1" | CG Perry-Lecompton | 2021 State KS , senior, Perry-Lecompton:
The 3A state football runners up are just 3-3, but will probably improve once they get everyone acclimated to basketball. Stone is leading the charge, with several 20-point performances. In the last two outings before the break, Stone went for 23 and 25 in wins against Riverside and Jefferson West. In the loss to Royal Valley, Stone had 24 of the Kaws’ 38 points.
Nahcs Wahwassuck Nahcs Wahwassuck 6'5" | CG Royal Valley | 2022 State KS , junior, Royal Valley (pictured):
It’s no surprise that the 6-foot-5 do-everything guard is off to a good start. He demonstrated on the summer circuit that he can measure up with the best players from anywhere around the state. Wahwassuck does much more than just score for the 5-1 Panthers. So his scoring totals vary a bit. But he did pop for 32 in a back-and-forth battle with Davies and Riverside, and had 22 against Jefferson West.
