Landon Boss, sophomore, Osage City:
Boss is no revelation as a sophomore. He averaged 12.2 points and 6 boards as a freshman. But he’s taken his game to a whole new level for the 5-0 Indians this year. He already has games of 36, 26 and 22, and has yet to be held under 16. Boss is establishing himself as one of the top sophomores in the small school ranks.
Gunnar Fort, senior, Osage City:
While Boss is a making a name for himself as a sophomore, Fort is reestablishing himself as one of the top players in the Flint Hills League after a year’s absence due to injury. He was the Indians’ leading scorer as a sophomore. Now as a senior, he’s showing he hasn’t lost a thing. Like Boss, Fort has yet to be held under 16 in a contest, and he has games of 27 against Santa Fe Trail and 20 against Central Heights.
Luke Detwiler, senior, Lyndon:
3-0 Lyndon is stacked. They don’t rely on any one player, which is a formula that took them to the finals of sub-state last year. Detwiler isn’t necessarily the leader of the Tigers, but he’s had a couple of high scoring games in the early part of the season. The 6-foot senior popped in 19 against Burlingame and 18 against West Franklin.
Koen Hula Koen Hula 6'4" | PF Council Grove | 2022 State KS , junior, Council Grove:
Council Grove has gotten off to an 0-2 start, partly due to facing two very good teams. They were downed by Osage City and Rock Creek. The 6-foot-3 Hula racked up 13.1 points and 9.4 rebounds a game as a sophomore. The big man hasn’t broken out yet, but he should get untracked after the holidays. So far, he tallied 11 against Osage City and 8 against Rock Creek.
Dayton Logan, senior, Mission Valley:
Like Council Grove, Mission Valley is off to a rough 0-2 start, in part due to facing tough competition. But the 6-foot-5 Logan is giving his best to turn it around. Thus far, he has accounted for about one-third of the Vikings’ points. He tallied 14 against Lyndon and 18 against St. Marys.
Braden Heins, junior, Northern Heights:
The roughest start to the campaign has been experienced by 0-6 Northern Heights. Graduation hit the Wildcats hard. But the 6-foot-2 Heins is putting forth a good fight. He’s scored in double figures in four of the five games, including 22 against Central Heights and 17 against Frankfort.
