Typically, we will have already started with some tournaments at this time of the year to get things kicked off, but there has to be a compromise on both ends. Not only will the season start late, but it will be a condensed season, so teams and players must get off to hot starts. Here we will focus on a league that should be much improved and balanced, the 5A Front Range League.
Jimmy Starry Jimmy Starry 6'1" | CG Boulder | 2021 State CO – Boulder
Starry is a combo-guard/wing that seems to get better every single time that we see him. Starry is a player that stars in his role and does whatever is asked of him. He can score, defend, rebound, and get others involved, and depending on the situation, he is the player to go through. For Boulder, he is the swiss-army-knife that gives the team energy and some versatility. He put up 8.8 points a game and got others involved as a playmaker with the ball in his hands. Starry stood out this summer with the Colorado Titans as he gets the opportunity to get out and run. He is lethal in the open court, uses his speed for blow by finishes, and also can consistently knock down the 3-ball. This season for the Panthers, he will be one of the players that Boulder leans on. I think he has a huge season.
Greyson Carter Greyson Carter 6'4" | SF Fairview | 2021 State CO – Fairview
It was a bit shocking to me that Carter was not named as the player of the year for his conference last season as the 6’4 standout who also happens to be a top player in the state in baseball led his team to a 23-3 overall record after leading the team in both points at 17.9 points a game as well as rebounds at 7.9 boards a game. Carter had his team in a position to take it all home before the season came to an end and did it by dominating smaller players in the post and taking bigger players off of the dribble and finishing. Carter is a matchup nightmare as he takes care of the ball and can score from all 3-levels. The game slows down for him, and he attacks mismatches. If he elects to play basketball this year, with his college future already set for him on the diamond, he will head into the season as one of the state’s top players and my pick for the conference’s player of the year.
Tyce Baldwin Tyce Baldwin 6'4" | CG Fossil Ridge | 2021 State CO — Fossil Ridge
Baldwin is the most athletic player in the conference and quite frankly does whatever he wants in conference play. Now with a shakeup and him going against more defensive-minded teams I’m excited to see how his game translates. Baldwin scores from all three levels and as a junior was a stat-stuffer. Baldwin averaged 13.2 points and just under five boards a game and when the offense got stagnant they knew to give the ball to their best player and he delivered. Baldwin carried that strong play into a summer where he played exceptionally well standing out in scrimmages, showcases and runs. His athletic ability makes it easy for him to get to his spots and he also seemed to become a more aggressive summer as the summer progressed. Baldwin has a game that translated to the next level and he gets his most out of his 6’4 frame. Once he opens up the playmaking for other ability and playing to his ability night in and night out I think he becomes one of the most interesting players in the class.
Gavin Poxson Gavin Poxson 6'4" | SF Legacy | 2021 State CO – Legacy
Poxson was Legacy’s best player as a junior and was one of the top standouts in the conference after putting up 13.7 points and near four rebounds a game. The 6’4 standout is a natural scorer that is comfortable with the ball in his hands, has body control, and is a scrappy defender as well. Poxson is dangerous in the open court but makes the right decision in the halfcourt game as well. He finds holes in the defense, moves without the ball, attacks in isolation situations, and can hit the 3-ball. This summer, he made his mark felt for Colorado Chaos as he showed that he could work off of the ball but take over when needed. He will go into a highly anticipated senior season where he will most likely be one of the conference’s top scorers. Big season upcoming.
Kameron Goodrich Kameron Goodrich 6'2" | CG Broomfield | 2022 CO – Broomfield
Goodrich is a combo-guard/wing that has certainly been in the weight room and will bring that new look to a new team. Goodrich steps into a situation with Broomfield where he can finally prove himself in his junior season. Goodrich has a consistent 3-pointer, the ability to put the ball on the floor, finish at the rim, and is a committed defender. Getting others involved and taking over at moments will be what Goodrich will have to do as Broomfield had their best players from a season ago graduate. He will have to get off to a quick start as he is behind the 8-ball after having to sit for a season but is surely a player to watch in the conference.
