Another way we’re branching out is by digging into prospect’s film that are sent to us and doing brief breakdowns on each. Adam Ayalew and I have taken on this challenge and if any prospect is looking to have their film studied, I urge you to message me on Twitter @ColbyGHoops or on Instagram @colbygscouting.

Tyrin Bizzelle | 5’10 | Frederick Douglass ’24
Baltimore had a special crop of freshmen set to take the stage this season and Bizzelle is a part of that group. The 5-foot-10 southpaw lead guard showcased what he has to offer in the Black Panther Fall League. He’s a shot maker from three and does so efficiently off the catch or off the dribble. Bizzelle can create space from his defender with his quick-twitch ability and can get into his shot quickly to make up for his height. Bizzelle displayed great vision in the open floor with advanced passes on the money to streaking teammates for easy lay ups. He also showed some ability to pass with craft and read the defense at an advanced stage for his age.
Jevon Yarborough | 5’11 | Williamsport ’22
I’ve always been a fan of what Yarborough brings from the point guard position. He’s a 5-foot-11 floor general who really understands the game. He knows how to control the pace. For instance, he knows when to push the tempo and knows when to pull the ball out and get into an offensive set. He’s a scoring threat from all three levels and can operate in isolation situations or ball screens. Just because he can score at a high rate doesn’t mean he won’t look to create for others. What makes him effective in ball screen scenarios is his vision and ability to anticipate defensive rotations and find open teammates. The word that comes to mind when I think of Yarborough is balanced.
Nas Sturdivant Nas Sturdivant 5'11" | PG Severn School | 2023 MD | 5’8 | Severn ’23
Sturdivant was one of the most productive freshmen from last season that flew under the radar. He played a ton of minutes for Severn and proved himself as being a savvy scorer despite his height and age. He utilizes change-of-pace dribbles effectively to get an edge on his defender. From there, he’s capable of stopping on the dime for a mid-range pull up or getting to the rim and finishing with craft to avoid shot blockers. I wouldn’t categorize Sturdivant as one of the these overwhelmingly explosive small guards, but that doesn’t mean he can’t take advantage of defenders in isolations. His three-point shot is what forces his matchup to guard him pretty much anywhere on the floor, which presents opportunities for Sturdivant to take advantage of attacking closeouts off the catch and making plays. Defensively he has quick hands that assist in steals whether that be guarding the ball or playing in the passing lane.
Detwan Montague Detwan Montague 6'8" | C Springdale Prep | 2021 State MD | 6’8 | Springdale Prep ’21
Montague made the transfer from Milford Mill to Springdale Prep this summer in large part because of the likelihood that Baltimore County would not have a season. He’s taking advantage of the opportunity and averaging 15 points and 13 rebounds through their first six games. Montague is an old-school big, meaning he likes to operate on the block with his back to the basket or hang out around the dunker’s spot awaiting dump off passes from penetrating guards. He scores at an efficient clip on his touches and converts free-throws at a high rate for his position. Montague has benefitted from his length and opposing teams having lack of height to help bolster his rebounding numbers, but he’s an extremely hard worker who fights for position and pursues the ball at its peak. From the film I gathered, I’d still like Montague to improve on his lower body strength as there were numerous occasions where smaller players used their leverage and Montague struggled to get position.
