With that said, here are some of the top “Mighty Mites,” who are guards that are listed at 5’9″ and under. They may be small, but their impact on games is not.
Ray Horry Ray Horry 5'7" | PG Christian-O'Fallon | 2022 State MO 5’7″ Christian-O’Fallon: This 2022 dynamo is the sparkplug for a fast and furious Christian team that won the Winfield Tournament last week. He is quick in the passing lanes on the full court press and he pushes the tempo whenever possible. He is a good athlete who rebounds well for his size. He will also block a shot with his athleticism. He is a capable scorer who will also dish the rock. He scored 18 in the championship game victory over Winfield.
Tyliek Moore Tyliek Moore 5'6" | PG Hayti | 2021 State MO 5’8″ Hayti: The diminutive point guard is a potent offensive player who can really get the points in bunches when he gets going. He is constantly probing and attacking to see what he can get on dribble penetration. He has a solid pull up jumper and a float game and can hit enough 3-pointers to keep the defense honest. He scored 34 points in the first game of the Gideon Tournament and followed up with another 22 in the semifinals.
Keashon Petty Keashon Petty 5'10" | PG Parkway North | 2021 State MO 5’9″ Parkway North: The 2021 guard scored his 1,000th career point last week at the Parkway Tip-Off Classic. He is as fast with the ball from end to end as you are going to see and he finishes well at the rim. He can outrun defenders with the ball in his hand while they do not have a ball and are just running.
Sonny Amabile Sonny Amabile 5'9" | CG Windsor | 2021 State MO 5’9″ Windsor: A 2021 point guard who has a pass-first mentality and the leadership to organize his team and keep them together. He’s quick and he plays the angles well and he can find open teammates with his court vision. He can also score when he has to with a 3-point stroke coming off the ball screen or the ability to dribble penetrate. Has the mental toughness to make big plays down the stretch.
Sam Ryan 5’8″ St. Joe Lafayette: Saw this young 2023 for the first time at the Phog Allen Invitational and was impressed with his willingness to make big plays in close games. In an overtime game against Lee’s Summit, he wanted all the smoke as he took a number of key shots, including a driving layup for force the overtime period.
Devontae Minor 5’7″ St. Paul Lutheran (Farmington): A nice 2023 point guard who was impressive at the Valley of Caledonia Tournament. He is a pest on the defensive end with his quickness and ball pressure. He is a good decision maker on offense for a young guard who has a lot of speed. I look forward to seeing a lot more of him as the season progresses.
