December News & Notes: South Florida
In this article:
While the weather in South Florida has “cooled” down, the basketball action has heated up over the first month of play. I have personally been to many games and practices thus far on the season. Moreover, information has been coming my way that I think you should know about. Below is a breakdown of some players that have caught my attention.
This list compromises some players who were not featured in my week one scouting report.
2021 combo guard Jonathan Renois Jonathan Renois 6'0" | CG Somerset | 2021 State FL has been an offensive juggernaut in three games. The 6-foot captain scored 30 points in a victory over Miami Christian last Wednesday. Previously, Renois dominated in the Sunshine State Preseason Classic with 78 total points across two games. The Panthers floor leader is a three-level scorer that shoots efficiently at all spots. Renois has quickness and natural ball skills to create separation on his shot. This is a player who can takeover a game and score in bunches.
2023 guard Walter Ray Allen III picked up offers from Rutgers and UMass before the Thanksgiving holiday. Gulliver Prep earned a 58-47 victory over Ransom Everglades in its home opener. Allen III is a quick guard just beginning to define his offensive game. I love his play on the defensive end as he pressures his opponent and moves well on his feet. Allen III has a big time motor at that end of the floor and communicates off his assignment. His ability to attack the basket will only improve throughout the season under Gary DeCesare.
2022 Maximus Fuentes Maximus Fuentes 6'2" | CG North Broward Prep | 2022 State FL has looked good on the court for North Broward Prep. The 6-foot-2 shooting guard has averaged 15.7 points and shot 58% from the field on the young season. Moreover, Fuentes is shooting an impressive 70% on his two-point field goals. All of those averages pace the Eagles so far this season. Against Florida Christian, Fuentes scored 21 points on 8-of-12 from the field. Fuentes has a 6-foot-8 wingspan and is an excellent student off the court. He pairs well with MK Ashmore MK Ashmore 6'6" | SF North Broward Prep | 2021 State FL and Justin Abson Justin Abson 6'9" | PF North Broward Prep | 2022 State #230 Nation FL for the Eagles.
2021 RJ Morris RJ Morris 6'0" | CG Jupiter Christian | 2021 State FL has started his senior season in style. The 6-foot-2 Morris has scored 98 total points (19.6 Ppg) through five games. Moreover, Morris has averaged 9.8 rebounds per game. He is a big reason for the Eagles 4-1 start. Against Grandview Prep, Morris scored 34 points on 10-of-19 from the field. He also has been a strong shooter from outside with fourteen 3-pointers thus far. Morris offers a lot of options as a wing type player for Jupiter Christian.
2024 Cam Codio could be a player to watch over the coming months. The 5-foot-6 point guard scored 19 points on 7-of-11 from the field for American Heritage-Delray against St. John Paul II Academy. Moreover, Codio was superb from outside with five 3-pointers. That is not a bad debut for a young player. He is the younger brother of Wisconsin commit Jordana Codio, who plays for the Lady Stallions.
2023 Cheasny Carjuste looks to be a major contributor for Oxbridge Academy. The 6-foot-5 Carjuste scored 19 points and grabbed five rebounds against Gulliver Prep. Moreover, three of those rebounds came on the offensive end. You have to be impressed with his size and efficiency (64% shooting) in game one.
Miami Country Day is off to a 2-0 start behind 2023 Jasai Miles Jasai Miles 6'5" | CG Miami Country Day | 2023 State #241 Nation FL . The 6-foot-5 Miles scored 24 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in a victory over Divine Savior Academy. The sophomore standout averaged 16.2 points and 9.3 rebounds per game last season for the Spartans. It is safe to say the versatile Miles is off to a strong start. He is one of the best young talents in the area. 2022 guard Ryan Richardson Ryan Richardson 6'4" | CG Miami Country Day | 2022 State FL also had a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds against the Sharks. I didn’t even mention 2021 Jordan Cooke who was a 20+ point scorer from last season.
