It was a great opportunity to see players from all over the Richmond area, and with some seasons in limbo it could be something we see more of this season.
We take a look at part two of the standouts, featuring six guys to keep an eye on moving forward.
If interested in watching any of these guys and others, the event was live streamed and the games can be rewatched on the CBG Live Network at https://cbglivenetwork.com.
Jakari Wilkins Jakari Wilkins 5'9" | PG Williamsburg Christian | 2021 State VA | 5’9” PG | Tribe Nation 2021
Wilkins is one of the most underrated players in the 757 if not in the entire state, and while he isn’t the biggest guy on the court he makes a huge impact with the ball in his hands. He’s lightning quick with quick twitch ability and blow by speed, he’s super shifty off the bounce and changes speeds and directions well and he lives in the lane where he has great vision and playmaking ability. He’s able to both create for both himself and others, he has a great floater in the midrange and understands angles and he sets the tone on both ends of the floor.
Ja’Mais Wertz Ja’Mais Wertz 6'7" | PF Life Christian Academy | 2022 VA | 6’8” PF | Circle Sports 2021
Wertz is a guy I have watched for years now and seeing the improvement he has made is something that’s very intriguing moving forward. He’s grown to the point where he’s pushing 6’8” and has a frame that should fill out nicely moving forward, he’s a guy who is athletic and is able to play inside-out and he’s become a big time shooter from deep that can make shots over top of guys smaller than him. He still has room to grow as a player and is starting to see his stock rise with coaches and could benefit from a prep year as well.
Christian Wilson Christian Wilson 5'11" | PG Church Hill Academy | 2021 State VA | 5’10” PG | Circle Sports 2021
Wilson is an underrated point guard that has had a lot of success in Richmond over the past four years and is a reason that coaches should be checking in at Church Hill along with some other talented guys there too. A dynamic lead guard who is lightning quick and athletic, Wilson showed his ability to get in the lane at will, his athletic finishing ability with a big time put back and he showed he can make shots from deep as well. He also thrives on the defensive end, where he can shut down opposing ball handlers and jump passing lanes and make plays help side as well.
Alphonzo Billups Alphonzo Billups 6'7" | SF Varina | 2022 State #154 Nation VA | 6’7” WF | Assist 2022
One of the top prospects in the state in his class, Billups showed his versatility and all of the tools that make him so intriguing at the next level. He has prototypical size and length to play at the highest level, he’s a natural athlete and naturally gifted at many things on the offensive end and he has tons of potential moving forward on the defensive end as well. He’s a great passer and with the ball in his hands, he’s shown improvement in his perimeter shooting and he can rebound well at his position too.
Rival Axselle Rival Axselle 6'3" | SG Atlee | 2022 State VA | 6’3” WG | Team 22 2022
A new name to keep an eye on over the next few seasons, Axselle is a smooth lefty with good length and a high IQ for the game. A sniper from deep, Axselle is a guy who understands spacing and moves well off the ball to get open, and he can really spray it from deep with consistency. He scored it well from deep and showed good feel on both ends of the floor, and while he’s under the radar now he should have a breakout year at Atlee this season.
Myles Diercott | 6’1” CG | FST 2023
Diercott is another name to remember in Hanover County as the young prospect showed a lot of promise at the event on Sunday. He’s a long and skilled combo guard that can play on and off the basketball, he has a great looking stroke from deep and he has a good feel for the game as well. He’s a good athlete that is likely still growing and should continue to get more explosive, and as he continues to improve he could become a well known name here moving forward.
