Athens 48 @ Warren 70 Recap
The Warren Warriors showed why they are regarded as one of the top teams in all of Southeast Ohio on Tuesday night with a blowout victory against the Athens Bulldogs. Warren dominated from the opening tip, leading 33-9 before coasting to a 22 point victory. Athens was playing without starter Trey Harris and Bulldogs star Brayden Whiting was slowed down by the tough Warriors defense. Here were the top performers from the game.
Seth Dennis, 5’11 PG Warren 2021: Dennis is a true floor general, as he makes the game so easy for his teammates. Always in control with the basketball and he picked apart the Athens zone. The play that perfectly described his game was when he made a poor decision on a pass that led to a turnover, Dennis picked the pocket that possession and got an easy layup from that. With Dennis back running the show, after missing his entire Junior season with a back injury, the Warriors have the potential to put up points with anyone in the area.
Kurt Taylor, 6’3 SF Warren 2021: Taylor is the QB on the football team and you can tell with his accuracy from beyond the arc. Solid athlete, he’ll play college football as his length can cause problems on defense. Plays well off Dennis, found open space and made shots after kick-outs from the paint.
Brayden Sallee, 6’4 PF Warren 2022: Sallee took advantage of every look Dennis created for him. His size was a problem for Athens alongside 6’6 Jake Baumgard. Stretched it out to the 3-point line a couple times and made the defense pay for leaving him open. With this experienced squad, I expect Warren to be one of the top teams in Southeast Ohio this season as they only play Juniors and Seniors on varsity.
