It also featured some promising young talent. In this article, we take a look at the top performers from the class of 2023 from the event.
Sterling Knox 6’4 SF Purple Reign (featured image) – Knox is on my stockriser list. I love guys that always produce and he’s starting to put together consistently good games, no matter when you catch him. His shooting was elite this weekend, combined with his size, playmaking, and versatility and he’s becoming an intriguing prospect. Knox routinely showed the ability to grab it off the glass, lead the break, and dish for teammates.
Sebastian Mack Sebastian Mack 6'4" | CG Coronado | 2023 State #58 Nation NV 6’1 CG Purple Reign – His finishing ability checks out, but what I learned new about Mack this week was his leadership skills. He’s a mature, vocal leader, and competitor, that provided positive reinforcement to teammates through rough stretches in games. He backed up his talk with his shooting, helping Purple Reign to W’s in 2 of their first 3 games.
Gavin Marrs Gavin Marrs 6'11" | PF Ellensburg | 2023 State WA 6’9 PF Friends of Hoop -I love Marrs’s activity. He’s still mostly an R&J guy, however, he has size, length and is above average in that category. He manufactured points with energy and hustle, getting putbacks, defensive rebounds, and blocks. He has the potential to be a serious problem in two years, as his offensive skill set expands.
Donovan Black 6’5 SF D1 New Mexico – Black wasn’t the flashiest player, but he produced this weekend. He managed to find buckets around the rim, displayed flashes of ball skills, and finished in transition. Even sometimes competing against a couple of postgrads squads, Black held his own.
Alan Acevedo 6’0 CG Colorado Titans – Acevedo was a willing defender, however, what I liked most about him was his energy and effort. He’s going on my all floor burn team, as he was consistently hitting the deck.
Miles Heide Miles Heide 6'7" | C Mount Si | 2023 State #274 Nation WA 6’7 PF Team Lavine – Heide just kept growing on me. Even when he couldn’t finish around the rim, he played with consistent activity, rebounding, and blocking shots. Heide’s a fluid runner, that changes ends naturally. What intrigues me the most about him was his passing ability. He showed good vision and accuracy, making solid interior passes to set up teammates.
