From our perspective — covering the state landscape from a recruiting lens — we miss seeing a small-town senior become the hottest name on the local college recruiting trail after a deep tournament run. We miss watching the junior who improved all summer earn his first offer after being considered more of a D-III kid. We miss learning new names. We miss getting our first impression of the freshmen class throughout the year.
After watching some ball in the summer and fall, however sparing, and staying in contact with trusted sources, here’s who we believe would’ve had a breakout season in 2020-21, had things been normal.
Myles Williams Myles Williams 6'2" | SG Arbor View | 2021 State NV 6’2 SG Arbor View 2021 – Watched Williams play all summer and loved his ability to score the basketball. The long smooth wing did a good job of finishing in transition and drives. The Aggies lost a lot from last season, including their top 4 scorers. Williams’s ability to get buckets would have been a huge asset to a team that has gotten used to winning over the last few years.
Calvi Schmeling Calvi Schmeling 6'5" | SG Clark | 2021 NV 6’5 SG Clark 2021 – Schmeling would have gotten the opportunity to get on the court this year. His length would have opened doors, his skills would have opened eyes, and his almost 4.0 GPA would have made jaws drop. Would have been a key piece to an improved Clark Team.
Jo – Jo Garcia Jo – Jo Garcia 6'2" | SG Foothill | 2021 State NV 6’1 PG Foothill 2021 – Jo – Jo is a high ceiling guy who could have easily made my all upside team. On a deep Foothill team, I fully expected Jo-Jo to emerge as the offensive catalyst. He has a better than advertised handle, and his shooting is always going to give him an opportunity to get on the floor.
Jalen Foy Jalen Foy 6'5" | SF Canyon Springs | 2022 State NV 6’4 SF Canyon Springs 2022 – I thought Foy was good last year for C.S. I also thought he was a little on the heavier side. That worry has been alleviated, as a new and improved Foy looks quicker, sleeker, and more athletic. He still has his shooting ability and with Canyon losing it’s top 3 scorers, it’s a good bet that he would have been counted on to be a major contributor.
Jason Condron Jason Condron 6'1" | SG Palo Verde | 2021 State NV 6’0 SG Palo Verde 2021 – Condron would have been the only returning player that received significant minutes from a Panther squad that tied for the division crown. He’s one of the best shooters in the state, and in a renewed role, and a presumable Greenlight, you could probably except a couple of games where he would have put up some eye-popping numbers.
Angelo Kambala Angelo Kambala 5'10" | CG Liberty | 2023 State NV 6’0 CG Coronado 2023 (featured image) – During this tumultuous year, perhaps no player has put together a more consistent body of work than Kambala. What’s intriguing about him is that he’s done it against top competition. While playing on some of the largest stages of the year, he’s proven that his confidence, defense, and transition scoring ability are staples of his game. In a normal year, he’s the kind of sophomore that develops into a stud right around playoff time.
