The rising anticipation of the eventual commencement of the season has come to a crescendo and Prep Hoops has been previewing this excitement for the last few months.
PH will be continuing to find the best talent across the state, including this multi-part series of junior standouts to watch in the Mid-Penn Conference.
Jaden Mitchell, PG/SG State College: Mitchell is an up-and-coming talent on State College’s varsity team. He bounced around JV, but had found his spot, his niche on this team. One thing that immediately jumps out on the tape is his defensive prowess, with multi-steals per game-type potential. While Mitchell is known to create havoc on the defensive end, he also looks like someone who can break out on offense and really expand his scoring ability. He can shoot from the outside and can drive inside. Adding a solid mid-range to his game will make him dangerous this season.
Dylan Young, SG/PG Carlisle: Young is a three-sport athlete at Carlisle, and his two other sports, lacrosse and football, have really helped him become a dominant force on the basketball court. He finds a way to get into the lane, going up strong and powering through contact. He’s someone who is going to create a lot of turnovers off steals and then break out and finish hard at the basket. Young looks confident with the ball, handles it well, is crafty, and really shoots the elbow jumper well.
Domingo Cruz, SG Central Dauphin East: Cruz will be seeing the floor significantly more for varsity this season, bouncing between JV and varsity in 2019/20 for Central Dauphin East. He is the type of shooter you want in an offense that pushes the tempo and likes to kick it out to the perimeter. He is a catch-and-shoot type of player, someone who is a really dangerous option from three, and is an efficient shooter. Don’t be fooled though, Cruz can beat opponents off the dribble and has a great mid-range shot. He will be a big key to the Panthers’ success this season.
Eli Shearer, PG/SG Chambersburg: Shearer, while listed as a combo guard, really shines more as a shooting guard and someone who dominates playing off-ball. He plays on the wing, especially from the outside, and has a great three-point touch. While he can shoot the three extremely well and efficiently, he is a crafty guard who can drive into the lane with flair and ease. Shearer, currently 6’2”, is one of Chambersburg’s best scoring options this season and arguably their most athletic guard, if not one of their most. Keep tabs on him throughout the season.
Donovan Hill Donovan Hill 6'8" | PF Central Dauphin | 2022 State PA , SF/C Central Dauphin: Hill is the ideal size for a stretch forward and a very well-rounded player in Central Dauphin’s frontcourt. There will be many eyes on him this season and for good reason: Hill dominates on the court. His size is crucial on the block, boxing out opponents, backing down defenders, or grabbing key rebounds on the boards. He plays with confidence and stands his ground well down low, though if he’s going to play center, he will need to put on some more muscle on his 6’8” frame. Hill already looks very strong with the rock, but the weight will help him withstand contact at the rim and will give him that extra advantage on the battle of the boards. His junior year is primed to be his breakout year to keep an eye out.
