There is a lot of talent scattered throughout the state to look at, and Prep Hoops has been providing you with some of the best players to watch as this season develops.
This is the first part in a multi-part series, where PH is going to the Mid-Penn Conference, profiling junior standouts to keep an eye on.
Michael Baturin, PG Camp Hill: Baturin is the engine on this Camp Hill team, someone who controls the game well but can really get up and down the floor with ease, especially after creating a turnover from a steal. One he gets the ball, he’s sprinting down the floor for the layup and he’s aggressive when he gets to the rim. If he gets the opportunity to push the tempo and get a basket for this Camp Hill team, he’s putting the team on his back in order to do so. There’s a lot to like about his shot creation and playmaking ability, two big things to watch out for this season.
Kyle Shoen, SG/SF Camp Hill: Shoen is one of Camp Hill’s better scorers, someone who features well as a guard/forward combo. He shows a lot of great traits in both positions. He’s a great shooter and a confident shooter, someone who they trust to shoot the ball from the perimeter. On defense, he’s a lock-down defender, a player that can create a big turnover during key moments of a game. Shoen is going to get more opportunities to impress this season for Camp Hill and like last season, he needs to make the most of his playing time and with that comes more success on the floor.
Tate Leach, PG/SG Middletown: Leach is a veteran leader on this Middletown team as a junior and will be leading the point this season, a spectacular combo guard for the Raiders. He can shoot anywhere on the floor on offense and varies his shot selection well. He drives well into the lane and even when he doesn’t shoot, he draws defenders in and gives teammates more open looks. He’s a fast guard and is able to do what he wants on offense, slowing down or speeding up the game as he pleases. The combination of that and his stout defense creates nothing but a bad day for the opposition.
Julian Gabbidon, PG/SG Trinity: Gabbidon is going to be one of Trinity’s impact combo guards this season and his versatility with positioning gives him an advantage to feature in different schemes well. He actually shows a lot of promise as a possible forward too as someone who can pick off a dribble, cause a bad pass or block a shot, having recorded several multi-block games for Trinity last season. Gabbidon showed off a lot of potential as last season ended and he will continue to build off of that as this season matures.
Jordan Tirado, PG/SG Trinity: Tirado falls into the same boat as Gabbidon is in this season, but it’s a good dilemma to be in as a combo guard. While Trinity has a good team returning, they also lost seven seniors and star shooting guard Chance Westry as he transferred to Sierra Canyon in California to play with Bronny James and company. That means players like Tirado are going to shine this season. He’s a veteran leader, a great defender who created a lot of turnovers off steals, and his offense is something to watch closely this season.
