The event featured both boys and girls teams from all over Virginia and included some from Maryland and North Carolina as well. Here’s a look at part two of the many 2021 standouts in the event.
While it was a grassroots event, I used the player’s high school teams to help make things easier.
Cam Edmonds Cam Edmonds 6'2" | CG Western Branch | 2021 State VA | 6’1” PG | Western Branch 2021
Edmonds is part of a three headed monster in the backcourt at Branch that should compete for a state championship this year. A skilled and high motor combo guard, Edmonds is a guy who can score from all over the floor and thrives with his ability to shoot it from deep and attack off the bounce as well. He gets hot quickly and can flat out fill it up when he gets it going.
Bobby Johnson Bobby Johnson 6'2" | SG Western Branch | 2021 State VA | 6’2” WG | Western Branch 2021
Johnson is another one in that backcourt that’s very exciting and makes plays and sets the tone on both ends of the floor. He’s a guy who comes at you over and over again and uses his size and athleticism to finish around the rim, and he can also make plays for others as he gets downhill. He really thrives on the defensive end and on the glass, where he uses his motor to strength to force turnovers and rebound on both ends.
Christian Moore Christian Moore 6'1" | CG Cape Henry | 2021 State VA | 6’0” PG | Cape Henry 2021
Moore continues to look like one of the best available guards in the state, as he can flat out fill it up in a number of ways and has such a smooth demeanor to his game. He’s athletic and gets up around the rim to finish, he can stroke it out past NBA range and he’s a crafty finisher in traffic when he gets to the rim. He’s adept at creating space off the bounce and he can move without the ball to get open, and once he gets it going he’s a guy who has good vision and passing ability as well.
Bryson Spell Bryson Spell 6'7" | PF Cape Henry | 2021 State VA | 6’8” PF | Cape Henry 2021
Spell continues to show that he may be the best available prospect in the state outside of the Northern VA area, as he has great size and tools that translate to many different systems at the next level. He’s bulked up and uses his strength to show improved scoring around the rim, he can stretch the floor with his ability to shoot it out past three-point range and he rebounds well and has an underrated handle for his size. His improvement over the past three years has been exceptional, and his projection if he continues to improve will be something to watch at the next level.
Elijah Kennedy Elijah Kennedy 6'3" | SG Green Run | 2021 State VA | 6’3” WG | Green Run 2021
Kennedy was an All State performer last year in Green Run’s state championship run, but it was this summer and fall that he showed that he may be a division one prospect. He has good size and a nice frame, he can score it from multiple levels and is a good athlete around the rim and he has a great all-around game on both ends. He really thrives with his ability to make shots from deep, as he has good range, works well off the ball to get open and elevates well to shoot over guys.
Jake Cooper | 5’9” PG | Green Run 2021
Cooper is one of the smoothest guards and one of the best floor generals in the 757, and he’s a guy who gets the best of a lot of very good players. He’s extremely poised and knows how to run the show and get his teammates involved, he can score it off the bounce from multiple levels and he makes everything look extremely effortless on both ends. He’s a pick pocket defensively, and his footwork and smoothness off the bounce makes him able to get to his spots and finish pretty much anywhere on the floor.
Quadir Pettaway Quadir Pettaway 6'0" | PG Woodside | 2021 State VA | 6’0” G | Woodside 2021
Pettaway returns to Newport News after spending last year at Miller School, and he showed that he’ll bring the ability to score the basketball from almost anywhere on the floor over the weekend. He’s a guy who’s wired to score and he has great ability to create space and make shots from deep, and he has a good middle game as he can shoot the floater and the pull-up well. He’s a guy who thrives in isolation situations and can really fill it up when he gets it going.
