Top Performers: Sunshine State Preseason Classic (Part One)

<p>Over in <strong>North Lauderdale</strong>, I took in night one of the <strong>Sunshine State Preseason Classic</strong>.</p> <p>Here is a quick rundown of the scores from Wednesday night. <strong>Chaminade-Madonna</strong> was replaced by <strong>Somerset</strong> <strong>Prep</strong> against <strong>Westminster Academy</strong> due to Covid-19 issues.</p> <p><strong>Calusa Prep Colts</strong> 66, <strong style="font-size: 1rem; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">Sagemont Lions</strong><span style="font-size: 1rem; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;"> 49</span></p> <p><strong>Mater Lakes</strong> 72, <strong style="font-size: 1rem; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">Somerset Academy (Pines) </strong><span style="font-size: 1rem; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">59</span></p> <p><strong>Westminster Academy </strong>67, <strong style="font-size: 1rem; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">Somerset Prep </strong><span style="font-size: 1rem; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">53</span></p> <p><strong>Top Performers: </strong><em>(Part One)</em></p> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="818672" first="Arturo" last="Dean"]</strong> - <em>Calusa Prep</em></p> <p>2021 guard <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="818672" first="Arturo" last="Dean"]</strong> was clearly the best player on the floor against Sagemont. The South Miami transfer scored a game-high 24 points and stifled the Lions backcourt on the defensive end. Dean pressured 2021 <strong>Rapheal</strong> <strong>Houssou</strong> over the half court and created turnovers due to his on-ball intensity. The 5-foot-9 superstar even rose up for massive block against the glass on defense. Dean was one of my <a href="https://prephoops.com/2020/10/the-preseason-miami-dade-county-five/">preseason</a> picks in Miami-Dade and he showed it tonight. It comes as no surprise that he is the top guard in the region. <strong>Florida Gulf Coast</strong>, <strong>Stetson </strong>and <strong>Mercer</strong> have offered him.</p> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="953074" first="Sergey" last="Grishaev"]</strong> - <em>Sagemont</em></p> <p>2021 [player_tooltip player_id="953074" first="Sergey" last="Grishaev"] displayed what I saw from him a week ago up at <a href="https://prephoops.com/2020/11/practice-breakdown-the-sagemont-school/">practice</a> in Weston. The 6-foot-9 Russian forward knocked down four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points. On defense, his long frame caused some problems for Colt guards as they drove into the lane. Grishaev should continue to be a factor as a stretch-four and rim protector due to his length. <strong>Andrei "AK-47" Kirilenko</strong> is sticking with me for now as a nickname. <strong>Rollins College </strong>offered him this past week.</p> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="1068706" first="Maximo" last="Moratinos"]</strong> - <em>Mater Lakes</em></p> <p>2021 forward [player_tooltip player_id="1068706" first="Maximo" last="Moratinos"] utilized his length to perfection against Somerset Academy (Pines). The 6-foot-6 Moratinos finished with 16 points and was highly active with lay-ins around the paint. Moreover, Moratinos finished with at least a half dozen rebounds. The versatile wing capped off an impressive night with a slam dunk down the lane for his final bucket. Moratinos is going to make a plethora of different plays on the court this season for Mater Lakes.</p> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="546221" first="Aidan" last="Abell"]</strong> - <em>Westminster Academy</em></p> <p>2022 combo guard [player_tooltip player_id="546221" first="Aidan" last="Abell"] continues his ascension up the South Florida ranks after a productive summer circuit. The 6-foot-5 Abell scored from various spots on the floor and finished with 13 points against Somerset Prep. Abell drove baseline for a lay-up, canned a wing 3-pointer and slammed down a put-back off a missed shot for just a few of his buckets. The conclusion of his performance is that Abell has an elite offensive attack on the perimeter and can beat you with his athleticism driving from anywhere into the paint. He is going to cause a lot of match-up problems this season for Westminster.</p> <p><strong>De'Shayne Montgomery</strong> - <em>Somerset Prep</em></p> <p>2022 guard De'Shayne Montgomery and Somerset Prep deserve a lot of credit facing the Lions on short notice. I assume the team was on stand-by after the late scratch of Chaminade-Madonna. That alone is impressive enough as Montgomery posted a team-high 16 points and scored in a variety of ways. The 6-foot-1 guard hit one of six early 3-pointers for Somerset Prep. I thought that early barrage kept the game tight for the better part of the first half. <span style="font-size: 1rem; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">Overall, Montgomery displayed strong guard skills and leadership against a quality opponent.
