We will recap the signing period, that ended November 18th, in the Boot and briefly look at some of the players opting to sign in the spring.
Early Signees (in ranking order)
Carlos Stewart Carlos Stewart 6'1" | CG Dunham | 2021 State LA (6’2″ / Santa Clara ) – The two-time state champion and reigning 2A Most Outstanding Player from Dunham signs with the Broncos.
Daniel Ortiz Daniel Ortiz 6'1" | CG Calvary Baptist | 2021 State LA (6’1″ / North Alabama) – Ortiz is a two-time all-state honorable mention in 5A (Southwood) and a 1-5A all-district performer. He will head to a Lions team which will be moving to the Big South this season.
Jamond Vincent Jamond Vincent 6'2" | SG Landry-Walker | 2021 State LA (6’2″ / New Orleans) – The LB Landry guard will stay home to play college ball in the Southland conference. He is an all-Metro and district 10-4A performer previously at Landry.
Joe Charles (6’7″ / UL-Lafayette) – The 6’7″ wing/forward committed to the Ragin’ Cajuns his junior year and solidfied his signing on day two of the early period. He is returning from an injury-plagued season hoping to end his career like it began…….with a state championship.
Will Allen Will Allen 6'7" | PF Bonnabel | 2021 State LA (6’7″ / Louisiana Tech) – Allen was the only junior to be selected for the all-state first or second team in class 5A. He was also an all-district and all-Metro performer for the state runner-up Bruins from Bonnabel.
Claudell Harris Claudell Harris 6'3" | CG Hahnville | 2021 State LA (6’3″ / Charleston Southern) – Another all-district and all-Metro player is the second player to sign with a team from the Big South. Harris helped Hahnville to a Marsh Madness appearance last season and hopes to help them return and win it all this year.
JonQuarius McGhee JonQuarius McGhee 6'3" | CG Opelousas | 2021 State LA (6’3″ / NIcholls State) – McGhee played combo guard and led Opelousas to the second round of the playoffs with his ability to punish the rim and shoot from deep. The Colonels pursued him hard and added another piece to their conference runner-up squad.
Avontez Ledet Avontez Ledet 6'3" | CG Cecilia | 2021 State LA (6’3″ / Lamar) – Lamar added the Cecilia guard who is one of the finest shooters in Louisiana. He will be looking to lead Cecilia to Lake Charles while having another all-state honorable mention (or better) performance.
Javion Richard Javion Richard 6'3" | PG West Monroe | 2021 State LA (6’3″ / Dallas Baptist) – The all-NELA guard is going to one of the perennial top 20 programs in Division II. DBU is part of the largest D2 conference in the country and needs quality guards. They are getting a top performer in from Louisiana’s highest classification.
Trenton Colbert Trenton Colbert 6'8" | PF Mansfield | 2021 State LA (6’7″ / LSU-Alexandria) – Colbert is a class 3A product who has made all-district and all-area teams previously. He will provide length and shot-blocking to a General team that likes to get up and down the floor. They are also a perennial NAIA power.
There are still plenty of good players left in the Boot with Derrick Tezeno Derrick Tezeno 6'5" | SF North Central | 2021 State LA , Emareyon McDonald Emareyon McDonald 6'1" | PG Scotlandville | 2021 State LA , and Keon Coleman Keon Coleman 6'4" | SG Opelousas Catholic | 2021 State LA waiting until the spring to make their final decisions. With 8 of the top 20 players in the state confirming their committments, it will be interesting to see the decisions the rest of the top players make. The regular signing period begins April 14, 2021.
