Melrose was 23-6 last season and return eight of their top nine guys. The six-foot-5/6-foot-6 forward averaged 16 points, seven assists, and 2.5 assists a game last year doing whatever his team needed to pull in victories.
“Rowan is a very difficult match-up for teams as he handles and shoots the ball like a perimeter player but is also very good around the basket,” said Melrose coach Ryan Dusha. “He has gotten stronger and more athletic every season so we expect his senior season to be the best of his career. He’s an unselfish player who can do so much on the floor.”
Nelson has high expectations for the group that has four starters back.
“Our team is looking very good going into the year,” Nelson said. “We have for starters back from a team that went to the section finals last year. We also have multiple players coming back who performed well off of the bench last year.
“This season my main goal is to make it as far as possible with my team.”
Rowan is playing football right now but the basketball season is also on his mind. Nelson is using his athletic ability at 210 pounds to play wide receiver.
“I have been focusing on football this fall, so I haven’t had a chance to play much,” Nelson said. “I only recently started playing in the fall breakdown league at STMA.”
Nelson had a great summer with the Minnesota Crossfire and is now hearing from two schools the most.
“I feel that a good summer with a good program and team has led to (being recruited),” Rowan explained. “The schools I am hearing from the most are St. John’s and Jamestown. The next step in my recruitment would be to wait and see if any other opportunities appear, and then eventually make a decision.”
