Last season, Johnson played an integral role for Lake City and he will look to continue to improve his skills in the next couple of seasons. Continue reading for a breakdown of Zach’s skills on both sides of the ball ahead of the 2020-21 season.
Defense: Johnson is a solid defender for the Timberwolves. Zach has long arms that he uses to jump through passing lanes and he makes excellent reads to steal the ball from weak ball handlers. Zach can guard both bigs and guards and he is equally capable of stopping both. Against guards, Johnson has excellent lateral quickness and he can keep the offensive player in front while still contesting any shots they take from the perimeter. When guarding bigs, Johnson is physical and can force the offensive players into taking poor, low percentage shots. He is a very skilled defender at a young age and he will continue to improve as he gets older, bigger, and stronger. Johnson is a tremendous rebounder and attacks the glass hard on both ends of the floor.
Offense: On the opposite side of the ball, Zach is a great offensive player. He has a knockdown jumper from the outside that he can use to stretch the floor and make bigs guard him on the perimeter. He has the potential to get hot and can heat up in a hurry. If not shooting from outside, Johnson attacks the paint hard and loves to finish through contact with either hand for easy scoring opportunities at the free throw line. He also likes to mix in a mid-range pull-up jumper that he shoots with confidence. Johnson plays the offensive game with a quality of smoothness and he looks like a veteran on the court. He is a skilled passer that can find the open man and he makes great offensive reads to set up his teammates for success.
Overall: All things considered, Johnson will be a great player by the time he is a senior. He is a solid defender that can guard 1-5 and get a stop every time. On offense, he can score from anywhere on the court and is a relentless offensive rebounder.
